Dodge ram p/u overdrive issue

My dodge pick up will not down shift into over drive when going up hills, it is getting to the point that it grinds now even when the switch for over drive is turned off. does this mean i need a whole new transmission or with some luck a fluid filter change?? everything else on my truck is in perfect running order and the body is solid. i dont want to get rid of it but also dont trust many machanics for the truth on such an money making part....

it grinds like it is trying to shift and gets stuck no metal sound just like a rough hard shifting sound, if i let off the gas and slowly give it gas it shifts like it is suppose to.

Grinds as in slowly creeps? or grinds as in metal noise?
Not shifting into overdrive, could be the kick down bands need adjusted.Or the kick down cable.

The cable is on the Throttle body side and should be lined up perfectly with the lug it goes on. Make sure you are not pulling on the cable or you will get a false indication of where it is. It has to be lined up with in a 32nd of an inch.. This is the baseline of where it would be in stock form. If you have it set like this and it wont shift until you let of it a little bit, then you need to loosen the cable a little bit. If you loosen it too much, you will have other problems..such as shifting too soon/late. It takes a while to get it how you want it. Start with making bold adjustments, you wont hurt anything, and see what it does. After you have a grasp as to what it doesn when you move the cable in either direction, make smaller adjustments..

You dont need a "tranny guy" to do this for you. If you dont know how to adjust the cable let me know and I or someone else on here will let you know how to do it, its.

Your overdrive is going out and eventually it will affect the whole transmission

It wont shift into overdrive the transmission has pressure I changed to fluids when I go to pass it wont shift into overdrive

strange as it may sound, transmissions do not shift into overdrive to pass
they down shift a ratio to get extra torque from the motor and will stay down shifted until the vacuum actuator shifts it back and only then when the VSS reports to the TCM that a ratio change up is needed will the overdrive click in
If you cannot get OD under any circumstances run the fault codes and check for a problem overdrive servo/ solenoid , TCM unit

Truck shifts out of gear at 50 to 60 miles an hour jumps in and out of overdrive at those speeds

check the tps ( throttle position sensor ). a bad tps causes transmission shift issues, bucking, jerking, idle surging, engine cutoff, hesitation on take off, surge while cruising down highway. am not saying this does the trick, but it is a good starting point. good-day !

Dodge ram 1500 4wd p/u overdrive issue

You can try and chg. the oil and filter, and when you do that maybe put some addative like lucas in with it, but it sound like its a little to late for that. but you could get luckey, your only out the fluid and filter, what 50 bucks if you do it yourself. Just to be on the safe side start calling around for a price.

Transmission does not always shift into overdrive

Governor pressure sensor or solenoid is going bad. To replace them drop the tranny pan, remove the filter , and the parts are pretty ez to get to. These aren't cheep thou, but replace them as a set. Parts will probly run about $200.
