The engine is turning over, but the spark plugs are being flooded with gas.

  • tendaa1 Feb 09, 2009

We checked everything except the fuel pressure. Will the fuel pressure cause the gas to flood the spark plugs?

  • tendaa1 Feb 09, 2009

That a good posibility, considering my Fiance took the engine apart to repair the lifers. I hope that checking the timing belt confirms that, that is the problem.

On newer cars its very rare for spark plugs to cause no-start issues.

When cranking does the enigne turn over alot easier than normal? is this a coil over engine? have you check fuel pressure or spark on the car?

This is not a fuel pressure issue.

If you are getting spark,You need to check the injectors for leakage and the timing belt to make sure the timing on the crank and cams have not jumped.

If you have checked everything else, just recheck it.

Won't start but did and stalled out won't start at all now and oil filler cap smells like gas

If the oil cap smells like gas, one of the injectors may be flooding the cylinder and the crankcase. That would not be a filter problem.
Check the spark plugs to see if they are wet.

Car will not start, engine turn fast enough to start. swapped relays still would not start. 2003 madza tribute.

Check if you have a spark by pulling the spark plugs and crank the car while the spark plug is on the ignition coil/spark plug wire and ground the threaded part of the spark plug and ask someone to start the car and look for a spark is a spark is present then ignition is fine. If spark plugs are wet and smell like fuel there is problem in the ignition system.

My van will barely start only if I push the gas pedal to the floor. And still then will die almost right away. I can smell tons of gas, Plugs are wet with gas too. I did change the o2s and have the same...

I don't think it is your O2 sensor especially from the catylatic, because you mention smelling like gas and presence of gasoline. "Plugs" hopefully referal to the spark plugs, try to trace where you see gasoline and where it is coming strongest from. This is a case of leaked fuel line, fuel rails, fuel injectors.
1) Trace the source of where it is wet, there maybe a leak somewhere and you car is not getting the amount of fuel pressure to combust and thus make the engine dies. 2) Check your fuel injectors, fuel line rail, could be leaking or become loosen and is spraying gas when the fuel line is pressured into the spark plug socket. 3) You may have a dead spark plug one or more, and isn't combusting the gasoline, thus creating no compression leading to engine dying. 4) Leaking head gasket. Best is tracing where the gas is spewing from. That should help.

DO COMPRESSION TEST SOUND LIKE BLOWN HEAD GASKET OVER THAT CYLINDER WITH WET PLUG.IF THE PLUG HAS GAS ON IT.SMELL IT IF IT IS GASOLINE ON SPARK PLUG YOU COULD HAVE BAD SPARK PLUG, YOU COULD HAVE BAD DISTRIBUTOR CAP AND ROTOR AND SPARK PLUG WIRE COULD BE BAD.

Car wont start, sounds like out of gas but tank is full

A car not starting can be caused by many, many things.........but...................a bad thermostat or a good thermostat will not cause or keep a car from starting in any way. you need to know if it is getting gas to the cylinders........and to check for spark at the cylinders.......pull a spark plug wire at the spark plug, pull the spark plug and see if it looks wet or smells like strong gas odor....then plug wire onto spark plug, (without re-installing spark plug), and hold spark plug onto a grounded metal object on engine (using a rubber insulated object, so you don't get shocked), then have someone turn engine over and look to see if spark plug sparks........if yes, re-install spark plug, etc.......your ignintion is sparking, but if you are getting fuel, it may be a jumped timing chain? You may need mechanical help........don't trust the person that told you about a thermostat........
