Unibody rusted out

The unibody where the rear engine mount is suppose to be mounted is completely gone. Can this car be saved? Is there a patch panel available? The motor is only supported by a single bolt. Unsafe to drive.

Hi, Wow is this a tough call! I assume it rusted away, but a 98? Was this thing underwater or parked on a salt *****?
Being totally realistic, if the motor mounts are that bad what other damage is there? To answer your question, the mounts are welded onto the frame and yes it is possible to have new ones welded on, but it would be a big job and like I said in the first place , you really should thoroughly have it gone over to determine if and what else is going to go next. This could be a money pit. You may do better if this thing runs to sell it for parts. I hate answering these questions as nobody likes this kind of news. Best of luck to you!

Ouch, IF you ask the DOT they will tell you it is unsafe and to try and find someone to do work on it will be VERY hard to do since the danger involved

look up under the car in front of the rear axle and behind the fuel tank. it could also be mounted to the unibody rail on the drivers side just in front of the drivers rear tire.

it will not he difficult to get under the car and follow the fuel lines to the filter.

Where is the fuel filter?

Should be under the car, on the unibody frame, in the fuel line.

Sub frame rusted

If it's the Malibu, the subframe is only in the front, holds the engine and trans, the whole back from about the front seats is unibody. The whole structure is just sheetmetal welded together. If the front is solid you are OK the only risk is if you get rear ended in an accident.
It would be weaker with the rust, also the hole could let exhaust fumes enter the car if there were a leak in the exhaust or extended idling .

How to replace left control arm on 99 mercury cougar

Here's what I found on Yahoo answers:
For the driver's side: yes, you will have to raise the motor.
On all models, remove the front motor mount, Mark the position of the right engine mount, remove 3 right engine to mount bolts. remove one right engine mount to body nut. On all models hold the strut shaft with an 8 mm allen wrench, loosen top retaining nut 5 turns. Raise vehicle, remove ball joint to steering knuckle pinch bolt. seperate control arm ball joints from steering knuckle. Do NOT damage ball joint seal. Remove pinch bolt attaching steering knuckle to strut. Slide steering knuckle up on strut, Move transaxle to gain access to control arm nuts and bolts. remove 2 nuts and bolts and attaching control arm to subframe. Lifting up control arm remove.
Now this to mark the motor mount because you are supposed to use a powertrain alignment guage when putting back together. if not you can bind the motor in the unibody and make for a shaky ride.
that drivers side lower control arm calls for 4.3 hours where as the passenger side calls for 1.3 hours. So you can see what your in for.
BTW these instructions are taken straight from the Ford repair manual.

Loud knocking noise in rear when going over rough patches in parking lot or road.

well other than suspension components the only thing i can think of is a really toasted wheel bearing, or a loose spare tire, gas tank mount or busted weld on the unibody

Does a left-rear shock absorber no longer attached to the unibody, with no attachment hardware being left up top that I can see signal a prohibitively expensive repair - or did the mounting hardware which...

This sounds like an extensive repair. Without seeing a picture of the hole its kinda hard to tell. Most of your shocks will need a mounting kit anyway. I think if you were going to do this yourself you would be best to go ahead and buy the shock and mounting kit and put it in yourself and if that turns out to be a no go for you at least you have the parts to send along with the car to the repair shop (hence saving you some bucks there anyway). Good luck to you hope this helps.

Sincerely,

JC
