Question about 1994 Oldsmobile 88

1 Answer

A 1994 Oldsmobile Royal 88 has a problem on the security system

You can start it by holding the door open and the interior light has to be on. When you decide to drive it somewhere you have to have the door open and the interior light must be on. Sometimes you can't start it at all if it has been sitting there awhile.

Ok first off let me warn you i have had this problem before but let me verify something before i finish warning you . the lights are on all the time or are you saying they have to be on to start the car?

Ok now for the warning you may not like me very good when i tell you the info that took care of my problem like that the reason being is because it is VERY expensive and may not correct your problem it helps on some of the cars with the problem and some it dont
My car has that pass key cap with the chip made into the key that starts the car itself and has a security feauture that will stop the car from starting if that key is wet, dirty or blown up( exposed to static thus blowing the chip) therre is one big differance though i have noticed on mine it done exactly what yours is but when driving or if i try to start mine in neutral the security light came on .

ok i know you are saying omg what price am i looking at and I honestly dont know since olds went out of business but before they went out it was going to cost me 800 for the chip 100 for key and 50 service fee
Now there is an alternative however to check this out and see if it is your key or not
if you have a second key try using it to start it and see if it does the same thing; if it does then its not the key but the security mechanisim inside the sterring column which means a new sterring column and possibly a new airbag system ( usually a shop Job) this security feature is nice however its alot of pain because after 3 minutes it shuts the car down completely ( the car thinks its stolen )

Car key reprogramming for 1994 oldsmobile royale 88. My car will start than it will shut right back off or it will not start all.

Your 1994 used the VATS antitheft system. This key is NOT reprogrammable. You can try to reset the TDM using the ten minute trick, this may work for you. As far as the key goes, you need a new key with a new chip. Remember too that it can also be a part in the ignition that may be failing.

Here is a good link on the security antitheft system.

How to install a half drive shaft on a 1994 oldsmobile 88 royal?

You will have to remove the U-clamp in the middle of the shaft so that the half-shaft can flex enough to be inserted into the transmission. You may have to turn the shaft so that the universal joint is flexed in the correct angle.

Hope this helps!

94 olds 88 want start

yes it can be the security system, find the two all white wires at the bottom of the steering column and cut them and solder the correct ohm resistor in between you will need an ohm meter to measure the resistance of the chip on the ignition key then install that omh resistor to the wires.

Yes, the key, ignition, or Theft Deterrent Module is not funtioning properly. You can start changing these out 1 by 1, or bypass the whole system for about the cost of a new key. This link explains and will help you.
