In general alternators are al lot easier to install than people think.. you should be able to do it in the parking lot outside your local parts store. you could probably get away with a wrench/socket the fits the bolts that hold it onto the motor/bracket. the first thing, use a 3/8" ratchet to put counter the tension on the belt tensioner, so you can remove the serpentine belt from around the alternator pulley. then undo the bolts holding it on and it should come right off.. also, be sure to undo the wire clip beofore removing the alt. the new alternator installs in the reverse of the removal directions. **notes be sure to have your charging system checked first to make sure that it is the problem, keep track of how serpentine belt came off so you can put it back on the same way (it only goes on one way) and you will need to put counter-tension on the belt tensioner to get it on.. in some cars it can be a tight fit and you may have to move/remove misc things out of the way to get it in/out, this is normal.. good luck

forgot to mention having a socket and/or wrench SET with you would be the ideal tools to bring, and maybe a screwdriver to undo the wire clip. you may want to look under the hood beforehand to see what you are getting into, you should see what may need to be moved.

doing things like this in the parking lot is really, really common and is a great idea for the novice because, if you have any trouble, they will usually help you out. it's even possible that if they are slow they would walk you through it, or even do it for you. after all they can probably get the job done in 5-10 minutes (15 min tops). plus they will also rent you out the tools you need for the job for free if needed.

check the drive belt for condition and tension as you drove on the battery only because the alternator was not working . The battery you replace was a good battery just needed charging. Putting the car in gear lowers the rpm's below that necessary to spin the alternator fast enough to keep the light off . When the alternator is needed the drive belt of some other failure in the alternator comes into play . have it checked out at an accredited auto electrician

2006 mazda tribute. The battery has been replaced and the alternator is not putting out quite the correct voltage but isn't really bad yet I don't think. It's will start ok for 4 or 5 days

Your going to need to replace the alternator, it may be charging the battery slightly and enough to get through a few days of starting the vehicle, but you will need to get the alternator replaced.

Battery light keep popping on every now an than when im driving.

Your serpentine belt running the alternator may be too loose. If the tensioner for it is good, the belt may be old and stretched. If belt tension is good, have the alternator checked-it may be tired and wearing out, not putting out enough current. Are all your battery and alternator connections clean and tight?
On my son's Cirrus, we found a loose connection on the battery post, keeping the battery from charging.
Good luck.

Its possible the alternator that was installed is defective. If you have a six cylinder check for power at the positive post on the back of the alternator. If you see battery voltage than I would suspect the alternator is bad.

BTW, you had the serpentine belt replaced as there is no timing belt on either of the motor options for that vehicle.

It can still be the alternator, the alternator can produce enough to keep the car running, but it may not have enough to keep the battery charged 13-14 volts. It don't take long for a new battery to drain if the alternator isn't putting out the right voltage. Find a voltmeter and check the output from the alternator to see what voltage is being produced. If it's not at least 12.5 -14 then have the alternator checked out.

Yes. There is a very good possibility that your alternator is beginning to fail. The battery only starts the car and maintains nominal accessories. The alternator on the other hand actually provides the fire/spark for the engine after it has started o keep the engine running.
The light coming on and off is indicating the alternator is failing or falling below what is needed for the engine. When this occurs the system defaults to the battery, where it drains the battery. At higher speeds/RPM's the battery light is probably turning off - right?
A very easy way to check this is to start the vehicle, and with the engine running, remove the Negative (black) Cable going to the Battery. If the engine dies, it is the alternator and needs to be replaced immediately. Once an alternator fails, it will drain and kill the battery.

My name is Ron,I will try and help you.Was this battery on the vehicle when the original alternator was on the vehicle? If so It is possible that the alternator was the begining of all the problems. The alternator produces ac voltage,12 volts ac,like house current. This is called alternating current, back and forth as you may. Before the ac voltage can leave the alternator,it is converted into dc voltage(directional current). This dc current only moves in one direction, thats why there is a positive and a negative.Diodes cause the ac voltage to only go in one direction( dc volts) there for creating dc volts,12 volts. These diodes are made to allow current to pass threw them only one way, current can not go backwards threw these diodes, unless they burnout, then they will allow voltage to leak out ,going backwards, creating ac voltage, therfore charging your battery up and having a battery with some ac voltage,or a lot of ac voltage. If this has happenned any motors ,such as starter motors will not turn to start a vehicle, cause they do not know witch way to turn. The battery will not be salvagable.Get the battery checked ,and ask them to check it for ac voltage,They might think your crazy but it happens, more than you think,a lot of mechanics dont know this,so you may have to ask more than 3 or 4,before you get a mechanic to understand .this is just a suggestion to try.Ac voltage will cause the battery light to light up.also check battery connections at battery and alternator for looseness and black corrosion, battery terminals most likely will have this. The large post on the alternator is the out put wire to the battery,Add another battery wire or small cable to the back of the alternator to the battery and see if this does the trick.May be this will fix ya,,,,,for more help
