Question about 1997 Ford Ranger SuperCab

1 Answer

Manual tranny works in 1, 3, 5 said it was the sector shaft

My buddy and i just bought a 1997 pontiac sunfire 5 spd to race he said his mechanic looked at it and said the sector shaft was bad and it would be easier to just replace the tranny. it drives in first third and fifth gears but not the lower gears(2,4,and R) What exactly is the sector shaft and i was thinking it might just be the cables everyonce in a while it will work in 2 and 4 when jerked hard back into but not reverse do i really need to replace the tranny? or is it possible its the cables?

If it is stand transmission and you were not being hard on it like racing it should be the dealer problem.
If it is a automatic transmission it's the dealer problem anyways because if the transmission was a good one it should last for a year or more. Sound like the dealer doctored the transmission.

Check the cables and shift linkages. If they are all good then it could be time to replace the trans.unless you know someone that is a good trans mechanic. You could price out a used one from the salvage yard.Hope this helps.Good luck.

The airbag light, on my 1997 Pontiac Sunfire comes on intermittantly preventing me from getting my inspection sticker. Is there something I can do to repair the problem without taking it to a mechanic?

Unfortunately, there isn't! AIrbag systems are nothing for the home mechanic to play with. They can be dangerous to work on and it's unsafe to just let a problem with them go.

1997 pontiac sunfire manual transmission won't shift out of gear.

What you can try is to remove the shift cables from the transmission side. then move the shifter and see if everything is free if it's still sticks then the cables are going to be replaced. if everything is moving with the cable off. then you need to remove the shift tower on the tranny (where the shift cable is I belive it's 5 bolts) remove the tower and you will see the shift pin. Inside the tower there is a cotter pin that breaks and that will cause you to have one gear and unable to selected another gear. If you are not mech inclined I would no attemped the shift tower repaire, the cables do it will save you money. The shift tower has bushings that can fall into the tranny.

2002 Sunfire No Reverse

the reverse is the first thing to go out in your transmition. Check trani fluid while car is hot and idling in park on level surface if needed add trani fluid. If problem persists sometimes replacing the transmision screen may enable the reverse usually and new trani is needed.

GT manual tranny replacement

Your best bet is to call a GM dealer and talk to someone at the parts counter, also most "junkyards" have volumes of books that list what years use what parts and so on. I can tell you from very recent experience (this week) that the 97 sunfire with a 5 spd manual transmissions had one of two different transmissions in them, the only way to find out which one it is, is to call a GM dealer with the VIN number. on a side note, I work at an autoparts store and had researched transmission replacement when my problem came up, and what I found was that transmission "suppliers" (companies that remanufacture engines and transmissions) that do manual transmissions for "passenger cars" are hard if not impossible to fin. replacing it will open only 3 options: find one in good condition at a junk yard (if possible), 2. Go through GM and pay more than the car is probably worth (again recent research proves that this is a fair statement) or 3. find a transmission shop to rebuild yours (probably your cheapest and safest solution).

good luck!
