Question about 2002 Toyota ECHO

1 Answer

Checking the light does not even come on at all

Drove to get the admissions test done in order for my daughter to renew her tabs. My daughter is the owner of a 2002 Toyota echo. Upon getting test done, the tech informed us that the reason for the admissions test failure was due to the engine light not coming on simply by turning the key to the on position. Drove to Toyota and made a diagnostics appointment for Monday February 9th 2009. Many offered their "two cents" by saying that the problem was possibly due to a bulb or fuse being out. On Sunday February 8th 2009 I checked and replaced the OBD fuse (the old fuse did not look bad). Problem still remains.

PRE-CHECK
1. DIAGNOSIS SYSTEM
(a) Description
When troubleshooting OBDII vehicles, the only difference
from the usual troubleshooting procedure
is that you connect to the vehicle the OBDII scan
tool complying with SAE J1978 or TOYOTA handheld
tester, and read off various data output from
the vehicle’s ECM.
OBDII regulations require that the vehicle’s onboard
computer lights up the Malfunction Indicator
Lamp (MIL) on the instrument panel when the computer
detects a malfunction in the emission control
system/components or in the powertrain control
components which affect vehicle emissions, or a
malfunction in the computer. In addition to the MIL
lighting up when a malfunction is detected, the applicable
Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) prescribed
by SAE J2012 are recorded in the ECM memory
(See page DI-14 ).
If the malfunction does not reoccur in 3 consecutive trips, the
MIL goes off automatically but the DTCs remain recorded in the
ECM memory.

What are the drive cycle steps to reset the system so we can get an emissions test done?

Sometimes it's not just one sensor that is faulty or worn and won't activate the engine light until one sensor is replaced to clear the light. Some vehicles have more than one sensor( such as 2 or 3 catalytic converters could have an oxygen sensor for each converter). I would have the dealership do another scan to locate which sensor is activating the check engine light (CEL.) I imagine they warranty their work for the initial work done recently if that's the problem. Most auto part stores will run a scan for free to detect what part (sensor) is engaging the light.

My daughters 2006 mitsubishi eclipse wouldn't crank. This we got it to work and drove it for a week. It did the same thing. Mechanic can't find the problem

Could be the ignition switch or the neutral start switch or the starter solenoid. Start by getting a 12 volt test light and check the circuit. If you get voltage to the starter solenoid then there is the problem. Good luck.

2006 Volvo XC90 AWD V8 with H7 halogen headlights always displays 'headlight bulb failure' warning even though my headlights are both working fine. How do I fix this?

Try to check the bulb on the light unit the fault is given, checking the connector,or even renewing the bulb, probably the resistance of the bulb is down in bright but can not noticed. It had happened to a customer of mine on a BMW 528i ,even the lights were working fine,I renewed the faulty stated by the vehicle ECU and then the warning on the dash gone.

When an alternator belt is changed, would it be possible to overlook a faulty alternator, even after test driving it? Car konked 2 miles down road.

If you asked the shop to replace the belt, they would have done that and made sure the belt was on correctly.
If they did not know there was a problem with the alternator they would not have tested the output.
If the battery light was on before you had the belt replaced somebody should have said something about the alternator.
Otherwise no.

i would start by checking the connections on the battery and having the battery tested, also why where you taking it to the shop?, if the connection are dirty a jump start wont work, they may look clean but loosen them and twist them on battery terminals to make good connection then tighten them ,and make sure battery is fully charged,

New head plugs and wires coil packs missing on #1 & #2 cyl

hi from uk i assume you have done all the above work correctly? and the leads from coils are correct firing order 1 3 4 2 ? CAMBELTtiming set correctly etc as you say this has happened since cyl head renewed and miss fire is on Nos 1+2 cyl's this normally suggest now after all work u have done and assume compressions are ok ? i had such a fault on a customers mini some years ago who had done exact type of job as you described this fault turned out to be the inlet manifold gasket had split between cyls inlet ports and resulted in missfire on 2 cyls adjoining on removal of manifold the gasket had been damaged whilst reassembling new gasket cured missfire which had caused weak mixtur on both cyls ie on induction more air being drawn via cracked gasket on each cyl and as your engine if injection same problem?? might be worth checking?? hope this throws some light on the problem?

Abs light stays on/strong smell

Check the E-Brake, make sure that the ebrake is not engaged and that it is fully disengaging. If that is not the problem, then there is something with the brake calipers or rotors that are not allowing your brakes to fully disengage
