What makes you think it is not charging? Are the head lights dim? Does the car not turn over? What happens when you jump the car with cables? does it start then? How fast do the turn signals flash when you do get it running?

Check for a big heavy fuse nearf the battery,i dont know if it has one?? iam a general mechanic not a mazada specialist, try this trick ? start engine and hold rpm at 1500,then disconnect battery and see if engine stops if it carries on running then altenator is working. If it carries on running then turn on all electrical thingys except the radio. If its still running ok then fault is elsewhere like a discharge overnight.

2002 mazda protege 5 new battery the alternator putting out high voltages battery light stays on take off from a stop car goes slow and rpms stays between 2-3

You have two different problems. An overcharging alternator won't be enough to rob you of THAT much vehicle power, so something else is responsible for that. Is your park brake on?

When you say "high voltages", do you mean like 13.5 - 13.8V or significantly higher than that? That's the range it really SHOULD be charging at - lower or higher mean your alternator isn't working right. Or rather, your voltage regulator isn't working right.

Battery won't stay charged, it is brand new battery, alternator has been checked and it is good, blown BTN 60 watt fuse, on 1994 Mazda Protege.

The 60amp fuse probably is in the circuit between the alternator and the battery. Which would be why the battery is not getting charged.
Someone would need to check for a short in the wiring between the alternator and the battery.

2003 Mazda Protege sat idle for 3 months. Would not start. Repair shop got it started but says the Alternator and Timing Belt need replacement (Timing Belt is new as of May 2010). They want to charge...

ok for the belt, it may be weather beaten or small cracks in it. and as for the alternator if its bad just get another one, and have a friend or a independent garage do the job. 900.00 dollars is way to high! thats a ripoff. call around and im sure you can have both of these things done fairly cheap! as for the alternator, if there is a rebuild place that rebuilds starters and alternators. this would be your best bet. i have had a alt. rebuilt and i only paid about 80.00. they are like new when they rebuild them. good-day !

What does the battery warning light mean on my 2003 Mazda Protege? Someone stole my manual out of my glove box so I can't look it up.

Hi,
That battery light on your instrument panel means the battery is discharging and the alternator does not charging the battery.
Better check your engine, the alternator belt might have been cut off or already missing.
The other one will be is to check the battery terminal if it is properly connected in the battery poles.
If all these are still intact, the problem would be the alternator itself. You have to bring your car to nearest garage to check the charging( voltage ) output of that alternator something might have been broken inside it. Usually the parts inside are the rectifier diode, IC regulator, and the carbon brush.
Hope that helps you out.
Thanks for asking FixYa!

I have a Mazda MPV 2000. Apparently the alternator is bad and the mechanic is going to charge me $581.00. How hard is it to replace. In looking at it, it looks like it may be really hard to get at.

I have a 1996 Mazda Protege. 3 years ago the alternator seized up
and what a job that was! The cost of a rebuilt alternator was a bit
over $200.00. The spaces are so damn tight it took me over 2 hours to get the old one out and 1 and 1/2 hours to get the new one in. And this was working with the car on ramps. I miss the old days when I could change the belt and alternator on 75 Chevy
Impala in 15 or 20 minutes!

1994 Mazda Protege, new battery, new alternator, wont charge

You must have blown a master fuse or fusible link.

Refer to the maintenance manual.

this happens sometimes during a jump start or a direct short in the elect system.

2001 mazda protege battery overheating - bad smell....., not catalytic converter . 1.6l.

You need to get the alternator output checked. If you can smell something like rotten eggs then what you are smelling is hydrogen gas which is explosive !! Batteries get hot and smell because the alternator is charging at too high a level. Check the output with a multimeter across the battery with the engine running. If it reads higher then 14.4 volts, its the alternator and you need to fix it as overcharging of your battery will cause total failure (if it has not already screwed your battery)..

Altanator keeps dieing.

A fresh charged battery does not mean it is a good battery. The battery is working the alternator to death, replace it,it has a bad cell,or the amps are to low,and has a short in it.The alternator senses the battery is in bad need off charge, and puts all out until the alternator has nothing left,This is the most likely cause of this problem. Also be sure the battery cable ends are shiny clean when replacing the battery.

3rd dead battery in 6 months

It's more likely a short circuit somewhere or a sticky door switch. Battery cables can be corroded but not normally bad in that they don't transfer current. Assuming the connections are tight and clean, the problem is probably elsewhere.
