Question about 2001 Mercury Sable

2001 Sable Ignition - Key will NOT turn the cylinder.

The other night, my girlfriend came home and shut the car off in he driveway. The next morning I wasn't able to turn the key in the ignition - at all. I have AstroStart and that still works, but is utterly useless if I can't turn the key. Any ideas? I'm thinking there's a wafer that broke in the lock cylinder, but I can't seem to even get the cylinder out of the lock to even inspect it. I've seen instructions for how to remove the cylinder by turning the key to the run position and pushing the release pin on the bottom of the cylinder. However, I am not able to do this considering the key won't turn the cylinder in the first place.

Forgot to put that in - I've tried easing pressure on the steering wheel lock. Doesn't make any difference.

Try turning the steering wheel with your left handle(to get pressure off of the lock) while trying to turn the key with your right hand.

It must be a tumbler in the lock cylinder itself then.Sometimes you can spray some WD40 in there or graphite and then insert and pull key in and out a few times and get it to turn, siometimes I have also had luck by inserting key almost all the way stopping just a little bit short of key being in all the way and wiggle the key back and forth and get it unstuck.

If that doesn't work you may have to go ahead and get a locksmith out there.

It might possibly be the ignition switch, or the linkage to it.

They reason I suspect this is your statement, "I bumped the key forward and it will engage the starter but still wont shut off"

The part where you insert the key is really a "cylinder lock", that then transfers the turning motion to the actual "ignition switch"

My wife had a Pontiac (also a GM product) that the cylinder lock had a linkage that went to the ignition switch (similar to a sliding electric switch, with the 4 positions, ACC, OFF, RUN, START), which was bolted on further down the steering column, underneath the plastic covering on the column.

Another person here had a similar problem, and after suggesting this, he wrote back that he removed his steering column cover and found a screw opposite the cylinder lock that had loosened and fallen out.

So you could try removing the steering column cover and see if all is ok.

Also, when you have it opened up, observe the action as you turn the key, as the problem could be the cylinder lock itself.

What you describe is exactly what happens when an electronic ignition goes south. If it has a carb, though, it could be any number of things. Also, when an electronic ignition goes out - it stays out. There is no intermittent functioning. Sorry I can't be of help. Good luck.

The sideview mirror lights and windows have

I am pretty sure it is the body control module. My 02 sable is currently having a similar issue. On a random day my girlfriend took the car to the store, the car started honking when she went to re-enter the vehicle. never done that before. Later that night the left front turn signal will not shut off. the turn signal light on the dash stays on solid, this morning the bright light indicator was on solid and the turn signals worked perfectly fine until the blinker light eventually went back to on all the time. I disconnect the battery at night or if I am not going to drive it for a few hours. But I am 99% certain it is the BCM causing this.
