Fill the radiator completely with coolant mixture. Let the engine warm up 10 to 15 mins. Is the upper radiator hose warm? If yes, then the water pump and thermostat are good. If all this works, then the leak is somewhere else. Hope this helps.

Car started knocking really bad got a cylinder 2 misfire code after opening coolant bleed valve with enging hot

Okay, it may be due to overheating, that may be the noise you heard, lets hope. first allow engine to cool, open radiator cap or the resivoir cap, which ever is the fill, remove the bleeder at top hose and fill radiator slowly until coolant comes out bleeder.

note if water pump was replaced due to leaking and engine was overheated at that time then it may be a good idea to replace the thermostat .
after filling is done start engine and allow it to run. watch temperature if temp start to climb past half way shut engine down and let sit for 5min. then restart and check level, in res do not open cap . feel air from fan and see if it is getting hot, this may take up to a half hour but do not drive,

A few questions, does this jeep have an electric fan?
when you heard the knocking was engine temp hot?
If you start jeep cold does engine knock?
Did this jeep get a new thermostat with waterpump job?
did it overheat when pump went bad and why did water pump get replaced?

sorry for all the questions ,just trying to get all the info to help you .

did you let excess air out of radiator? after filling let it run for a few minutes with out radiator cap and make sure the water does not go down and serculates after thermostat opens, refill if needed
do you notice moister under vehicle in the morning ? possibly a gasket could be leaking.

Friends car(2001 pontiac grand prix) 3.8 v6.started running hot,so he replaced thermostat. didn't help. so replaced water pump. helped very little. heater hoses cold to touch and blows cold inside. worked...

yes, but it's designed to drive the air out as long as you open the cap and run it until it's hot, keeping the radiator full. Eventually the air will come out and heater hoses should get coolant.

You probably have a blown head gasket, not allowing you to get enough compression built to start the engine.

Rent a compression tester from AutoZone (You get your money back when you take it back) and use it. If the compression on each cylinder is less than 100 PSI, you've got some issues. The cylinders should also be somewhat balanced.

you may have bad waterpump, the impeller on pump may be borken, just because it doesnt leak doesnt mean its good.also could have exhaust entering cooling system (bad headgasket) if pump is good have a block test done.

you need to replace the heater core and pressure text the radiator cap, replace if it leaks down go to a parts store to do this also you need to replace freeze plugs if you don't they will blow and ruin the engine,a slo check that the water pump is not bad, loosen the pump belt and see if you can wiggle the water pump with fan connected, if you have any play replace the water pump. and add new anti freeze.

Temp gauge goes from cold to hot.

You can remove the rad cap and run the engine ( do not remove cap when hot!! ) You should be able to see the coolant circulating in the rad. You can also remove a heater hose and hold upwards and start engine, if coolant flows out the pump is circulating. If all looks good at that point I would start to suspect a cylinder head gasket leak and / or cracked cylinder head. Hope this helps .. Good Luck
