Question about 2001 Nissan Maxima

1 Answer

Pop, burn smell, idling strangly, service light Yesterday I was preparing to enter on to the highway but as I made my start from the stop light I heard a pop come from the engine with a strange smell. I originally thought maybe a fuse but am also concerned that it would be a belt (not sure if the smell was rubber) So I decided to forgo getting on the highway and pulled off to a side street. This is when I noticed that the idling was off. When in park or neutral the engine wants to stay reved up. While in drive with my foot on the break the car feels like it wants to go. When actually driving it doesnt appear that the car wants to go less than 40mph. If I take my foot off the gas it loses power for a second but then revs back up a bit before reducing speed again. After about 10 minutes of driving like this the service engine came on. The car made it home which was about a 25 mile ride. Thanks in advance for any suggestions.

I would take it to an accredited ac specialist shop if you have to. The burning plastic smell is from a shorted wire ( ac compressor solenoid or thermostat under the dash)

Torque Converter could possibly be on the brink of taking a dive on you, recommend getting it checked by certified dealer. (tranny)

Service engine light

the burning smell that wasn't rubber is probably the smell of your brakes overheating and melting. but, if you have the money and time, go out and buy an OBD2 code reader. it should read the engine service code from the engine computer in your car. this will tell you what is wrong.(you will probably have to look up the code it gives you on the internet). or, you can take it to a regular shop and have them check the code. but if you know the code, you won't have to pay for something they say you need but don't.

good luck!
