Question about 1997 Pontiac Sunfire

I replaced the head gasket on my 97 Sunfire it doesn't start

I replaced the head gasket & cyclinder Head on my 97 Pontiac Sunfire. After putting all the parts back together, it started for a while and when I test drove the car my speed was not going up, it got stuck on 20 mph only. Then, the car died. I did the alternator test already & even changed the starter & the engine is still not running. What could be the problem?

If your timing is off you will have no power.check and make sure all timing mark's are correct.Some engine's are contact motor's,which mean's if your timing is off you could cause damage to valve's or piston's.Also you should do a compression test to be sure each cylinder has adequite pressure.Hope this help's.

General advice:U must track the leak .How much it takes to loose the coolant?.If the coolant shows under the car must identify the tubes clamps that need tighten or replace.If a radiator related problem need clean/solder/replace.If leaky water pump,replace.If no trace of coolant ceck the oil.If is color altered(milky)u have a head gasket ahead (with head revision)or a broken engine block/piston cyclinder.If the oil is ok,ceck the smoke:whity smoke means coolant in the pistons head.Again best guess:head gasket (can leak also in the intake manifold).Very rare coolant shows in some cars in the power stearing oil (!?) track the tubes.Tip:colored coolant (green...)is better visible in leaks.Tip:water coolant may show rusty spots where dissapearing (radiator,expansion deposit,pitched tube).Hope u deal it.Cheers.

If your head gasket is blown you need to cut your losses. Tons of labor for motor that could still be damaged from overheating. Put her to rest and save yourself the trouble. Next week the transmission radiator alternator starter And wheel bearings could go back to back. Loving **** doesn't turn it gold...

How much compression should be in cyclinders on a 1997 sunfire gt

The actual compression # you see is not as important as that they are all within 10-20% of each other. (I like seeing from 5-10% but that's not always the case) Generally you will see from 90-120psi.but the readings all should be similar. If one cylinder is way lower than the rest, (as in, one at 60, the remainder at 100) you have a problem. If two adjacent cylinders read low, having nearly the same reading, chances are you have a blown head gasket between them. If you find coolant on any plugs when you remove them, don't bother with a comp test, the head needs to be removed. When doing any head work, always have the head dye tested for cracks and checked for flatness. Never tear an engine down hot or things will warp. (head, manifolds etc).

1996 Pontiac Sunfire engine shakes and acts like it wants the shut off when at stop light.

Sounds like you have a bad cylinder...
This could be due to a number of reasons...
No spark at one cylinder, due to a bad spark plug, coil, or wire.
No fuel due to a bad injector
Bad cylinder with low or no compression
