Noise from dash or windshield

Hello I have a 2004 extended cab 4x4 NW edition.
When driving I get a fairly loud noise coming from the dash and or windshield. It sounds like the ticking of hail or insects hitting the windshield.
This just became apparent in the colder weather.
Is there something in the windshield or trim that is reacting with the heater????
I purchased the truck used last year.I haven,t driven it alot.it has about 54,000 miles on it and is in great shape.
The noise occurs approximatly around 30 mph.
Again it sounds like driving into hail or large rain drops pelting the windshield.
Thank you for any help...Robert

hi from uk this may be a long shot ? but the ticking/rattle you describe may be that prior to you owning vehicle ?? it may have had a broken/smashed w/screen at some time ? andmay be possible that some of glass fragments may have fallen inside the w/screen heater vents? and been missed when clearing up by screen repairers ? these bits may/will vibrate at certain speed as you mention in post so try pulling off hoses from heater that go to vents also try vaccing the dash vents hope this helps ?

I have the same problem I think it's the rubber flaps that cover the hood hinges, when the wind catches them they flap up and down it I have noticed it seems to be worse on a windy day.

Researching this I found three solutions I am still tracking down the exact source.
1- caused by wind coming off the bug deflector(someone on a chevy forum suggested this)
2- cause by the weather strip along the passenger side of the windshield. (not sure on this I put some pieces in the strip and it did not stop)
3- caused by the fender liner on the passenger front wheel.(plastic fender liner snapping on the frame travels up the A-pillar)

Does it have a bug deflector on the hood, if so remove it and see what happens. Apparently GM has redesigned one that eliminates the noise at windshield.

Probably the CV joint. When you put it in 4x4 that puts extra torque on it so it wont vibrate so much.

When I put my 2004 chevy tahoe in gear the rear end makes a loud whinning noise and does nothing then in with clack loud and catch and start going?????

A few broken ring gear teeth will cause that. BUT it wouldn't go very far till it made a whole lot more noise. The transmission will make lots of noises and can cause the same symptons you are complaining about. If it's 4x4 try and put it in four wheel drive and see what happens, don't drive far, that will help narrow it down between trans and rear end. If it's not 4x4 then if you can, remove the rear drive line, jack up the rear tires so they are off the ground and try and spin the rear pinion drive flange (the thing that the drive line was bolted to). It should spin fairly freely (it will have some drag) if you feel any binding or grinding then the problem is in the rear end.
Report back with your findings so we can better assist you.
P.S. both will be a big job and unless you have experiance working on these type of jobs then it will most likly be best left to someone who know what they are doing.
