brake lights light up? check fuses first. the brake switch on the pedal sends voltage to the shift lock. if you dont have brake lights then change the brake switch. if you have brake lights then you need to check for power at the shifter lock actuator with a test light. im not sure about the aztek but some models have a spot to unlock the shifter in case you have a dead battery and need to be towed. you may have to remove a cover to get to the override, put shifter in neutral then start the car.
Car wont shift out of park, the most common reason for this is the brake light switch may be bad. have someone look at the brake lights as you step on the brake and see if they are working. the shifter release works off the power for the brake lights. if the brake light dont work then first check the fuses , if the fuses are good then you will need to check for power at the switch which is located at the top of brake pedal bracket, there will be wires connected to switch, the way it works is one wire will have power at all times and then when the brake pedal is pushed the power will flow through the switch to brake lights and also to shifter release, now if the power is not going through switch then replace the switch. another setup used is the tps sensor, im not sure but this year may use this setup, a bad throtle postion sensor will cause this problem as it thinks the gas pedal is pushed. this is a safety thing if the tps is out of range it will not allow the shifter to be moved, this would need to be checked with a scan tool to check the readings.
Check your brake lights and see if they are working. The solenoid in the shifter is energized by you stepping on the brake. If your break lights do not work... your stuck in park. This can be caused by a bad brake light switch located above your brake pedal or.... a blown hazard / brake light fuse. Check them first.....
if your asking about fuse flasher under your hood passenger side under black fuse box the cover shouls tell you wich fuse is wich. or button for putting them on is on your dashboard or close to shifter button with red triangle on it
If the instrument panel lights up, the fuses are OK. You prob just have a burned out bulb at the shifter dial. You need to remove the center console to change it;
The bulb number you need to buy is: "194".
hello first you need to check the bulb below the gear shift panel that is not blown then if available your book on your car has a listing page usually in back look for fuses go to page it should have a diagram for fuses see wich one is for illumination of your shifter check fuse replace if needed goodluck
