Question about 1986 Jeep Comanche

1 Answer

Jeep comache will not go into 4 wheel drive.

I took two 1987 jeep comaches and made one. The one I ended up has set for about 7 years. I took the engine, transmission and transfer case from a wrecked one I had and installed into the one I am driving. The wrecked one always worked good. The transfer case ingaiges the front drive shaft for 4 wheeling. But the front tires will not drive. Looks like there is some type of vaccum and electric system on the front axle. Dont undersatand what it should do.

My 4 wheel drive no longer works.

WJ jeeps.
what mode? 4h, 2l lock >?
why not just drive it and get it all loose and happy first.
get the gearlube hot, see if it wakes up, i bet it does.
there is no vacuum hose. that is part time. used long ago.
vacuum ended in 1995 with command trac.
the newer cars the front axle is cut out, inside the transfer case front end. ending vacuum and now electric.

Select track (stay off dry pavement in 4wd)
Quadra-Trac-II NV 247 Gerodisc system 1999+
Quadra-Drive NV247
if quada stay out of low or lock.

read this page,. and discover what you have.

Broken wheel studs on a 1987 jeep wrangler

No need to replace the hub just the studs. The come in from the back and are splined to prevent the stud from turning with the nut. Remove the hub --drive out the broken studs and put the new ones in from the rear and drive them back in. Get the studs from the dealer spares or a good tyre retailer.

4 wheel drive quit at some time didn't know it...drives fine only rear wheels pulling..could it be electrical ??

I hava a 1999 Grand cherokee loredo V8 with full time 4wheel drive. when the rear tires slip I am hearing a poping noise in the front end when the 4wheel drive engages. I was told by one person that it could be the chain in the transfer case slipping but I was told by a jeep salesman that this year jeep did not have a chain. Could this be the CV joints in the front axels?

Coolent pressurizes and comes out tank by cap this is a1990 comache jeep.I just replaced the cap and that didn't help.

You may be experiencing a pressure feed from a failing head gasket or a faulty thermostat. Try running the engine with the radiator cap off and the coolant level at full and watch for bubbles at the cap opening. If you see a large amount of bubbles this could indicate a possible escape of cylinder pressure. If you do not see any bubbleling than you should possibly change your thermostat.

87 jeep wrangler 4 wheel drive don't engage dosen't seem like i have any vacum to the front end

remove the vacuum hose from the shift motor on the front axle.with the vehicle running,(be sure to set parking break and /or chock tires.) place your finger over the end of the hose check for vacuum,it will be very slight. if there is no suction it is probably the vacuum switch on the transfer case. if there is vacuum, first check the vacuum motor for holes.(they rust through sometimes.) if no holes are noticed, remove the shift motor and check the shift fork. if the 4wd indicator light comes on it is probably the shift fork.

I have a 1987 jeep wrangler and it will not shift into 4 wheel dr

The front axle connects 4wd by vacuum. check the vacuum hoses that run to the actuator. Pay close attention to the vacuum hoses running underneath the battery as battery acid can eat thru those hose easily. Good Luck.

2004 jeep grand cherokee overland, 2.7 CRD, half to full lock, left or right, front end juddering and scrubbing tyres off

Sounds like it is in 4 wheel drive mode.
If you have a switch to disconnect the 4 wheel drive it may not be working.
If the vehicle is full time 4 wheel drive or computer controlled 4 wheel drive you have most likely a locked in full 4 wheel drive mode situation.
Not good on dry pavement.

1987 Jeep YJ [Wrangler] so owner ship says''

Our Jeep Wrangler YJ's are equipped with a vacuum module on the front axle. It is used to engage the front axle when the transfercase is shifted into 4WD. Check the vacuum lines on the front axle to make sure they are connected. The passenger side axle shaft has a disconnect sleeve that is moved left and right by the vacuum.
