1990 ford 5.8l automatic transmission seems to shift funny

I just bought this 1990 f150 and the guy told me it didn't have drive i stuck it in drive and its fine but the problem i have is its a push button overdrive and if its in over drive it shifts rough like its slipping[but then works fine] but when its in drive it does the same thing just not as bad but as your going down the road in drive it just seems to drop out of gear then i shifted to 2nd and back to drive 2 times and its fine for awhile then it just drops out of gear again it don't slip when it drops out of gear it just drops out and revs up could it be something simple i was thinking torque convertor but i read something about a shift modulator could that be it

Could be a faulty solenoid, scan the TCM for faults and drop the sump for contamination

well the low cost way to go first would be to try and change the trans fluids. If the problems still remains the it may be an internal problem

sounds like a possible shift solenoid. If it's due for a fluid change, do that and add a container of lucas trans conditioner. Likely you have a drain plug on the pan so if the fluid was recently serviced, just drain a quart out and replace with the additive, then top off.
If the condition does not change within a week, likely you will need better diagnosis from a reputable trans shop.

Wow,
That's odd ,push button shift I suppose . Ford doesn't have a 2nd gear limp mode ,I don't think.
Has to be the manual linkage at the shifter, try manually shifting? still no low?

My 1990 f150 drives good, but when I'm going over 35 MPH and I try to accelerate it shifts fast and rough. Is this a sign of a bad transmission?? Fluid is ok. Any Hints?

Brutal shifts at high speed in an automatic are textbook examples of a far too high pressure in the gearbox's oil pump: the pressure relief valve is stuck shut.
It can be fixed, maybe even with the gearbox attached to the car if it's only the valve at fault, but it will cost some money - that valve has stuck for a cause.

Help on the sequence of the automatic transmision ford f150 90 v8

if youve got transmission fluid in it and it wont do anything it is a bad transmission, if it isnt shifting in a correct order then your then your modulator valve is unhooked, bad, or isnt on it and you have to buy one for about twenty dollars or so i think. I cant remember if it is on the drivers side or passengers side. It looks like a spark advance. I hope that helps you out.

1990 f150 transmission up shift to early

your modulator valve is unhooked, or bad. The modulator valve is what tells the transmission when to shift and what gear to shift to. It is located on either side of the transmission depending on the model, Im not sure which side your perticular model be on but it looks like a spark advance. I hope that helps you out.
