could be alot of things, could be fuel pump, could be injectors, could be plugs, coils, sensors... too many things that can cause this without further testing. Best bet to begin with would be to get check engine code out to see if it's related or not, and get us on the right track. If you do not have a scanner for the codes, u can buy one off ebay or any local parts store, and if you don't want to buy one, most garages will get the codes out for you for a certain price.

oh and yes IAFixItGirl has a good point, was forgetting about this but yes those mazdas had problems with the rubber from the intake tube and used to split open or disintegrate partially. Had to fix this on a friend's mazda cause the tube had a hole in the bottom and was not easily visible. So if in doubt, take the whole tube off to inspect, usually only 2 fasteners holding it there, and maybe a hose/wire or 2 to disconnect.

I have replaced the throttle position sensor, fuel filter, and air filter. I am still having the same problems. The fuel injectors have been checked and are fine the fuel pump is fine and the distributor is fine.

Judging from what i know, the timing on the engine is probably a bit off, and i remember reading the exact same problem on another web site and that is also what they said. So just check the timing on the engine or have it checked by a mechanic if you don't know how to do it.

VERY Bizarre Combination of "Symptoms" I Believe Relating to Clutch or Transmission, or heaven forbid worse! Please help!

Hi,

First, congrats on the most detailed problem description I have ever seen! Seriously, it does assist us.

All this is completely consistent with your clutch not releasing properly, meaning that the gearbox is still turning when the pedal is depressed. The syncros in the gearbox will then keep you out of gear, that is what they should do. You can indeed shift into higher gears however when driving as the gearbox revs more nearly match to what is needed. The jerking forward when you hit the starter is due to the poor old starter motor having to move the whole car instead of just the engine, because the clutch has not released !

Now as to why, it is likely that the clutch release fork has broken, inside the housing. I had this once with a Mazda, and symptoms were exactly as you describe. The gearbox has to be removed if this is the problem, and you should also then take the chance to renew the clutch, pressure and driven plate both, unless quite new.

Also a possible cause is a complete loss of clutch fluid if a hydraulic clutch, or a broken cable if that type of clutch. Loss of fluid in a hydraulic clutch can be easily checked in the fluid reservoir, and can occur if a hose splits

Check EGR valve and circuit and also coolant temp sensor. Also bad cat converter or muffler can cause this.

I have 2001 mazda protege with a 1.6 and its been sitting for 3years and when i went to drive it i noticed the O/D light and the engine light was on so i changed the transmission fluid. Then when i went...

well the o/d light should just mean that your overdrive button is pressed on the shifter, so try taking off and put gas and maybe fuel injector cleaner and then see what happens

My 2000 model mazda protege makes a clunk when making sharp turns, accelerating or shifting from 1st to 2nd gear?

Sounds like a bad cv joint. Easy way to check is to raise the front of the vehicle so both front tires are off the ground. Use jack stands under the vehicle and block the rear tires. Start the engine and put the tranny in drive. Let the front wheels rotate while the engine is idling and turn the steering wheel slowly in both directions. Listen for the clunking noise. You may have to speed the engine up a little to make it work.

My 2000 Protege is a manual shift. Just recently, when I'm in 1st gear and I let the clutch out, the car awkwardly hops forwardly. I quickly shift into 2nd and that gear is fine. Why is my car doing this...

Sound like first gear is going out on you. It could also be an issue with the clutch. If the car has enough power try to take off in second gear and see if it hopes. If it doesn't there's likely a problem with first. Unless you are a certified auto mechanic, it's probably best to bring it in and have them conferm that it is a problem with the gear and have them take care of it. It might mean replacing the transmission.

You are going to need a transmission shop. Mazdas do not always throw codes. You have an early OBD transmission, which do not send out many codes.

Rough shifting

It sounds like the MAP (manifold absolute pressure) switch might be bad. Since the check engine light is on, have the computer codes read.

More than likely the synchronizers are going out, they allow you to move from gear to gear without damaging transmission.

Check the air filter hose. My '99 Protege was idling rough and would sometimes shut off. The air filter hose was cracked half way around. I replaced it (easy just loosen two hose clamps and pull out the sensor) and the car is running fine.
