we tried to jump start it ,it will start but wont remain running, also the security light is comming on.when it was started you could hear it back fireing in the engine. dont know how much of a charge the battery has left in it.

sounds like the switch which is located on the steering column down by the brake pedal up on top of the column. this switch is operated by a long rod from the key switch if it isnt going down far enough it will not start the car.. Also this switch is adjustable with 4 small bolts which are hard to get to .. this is just a thought .. if you can reach up there and feel that rod coming from the key try and push it downward while you are turning the key to start position and see if it wont start.. if this fails is it also possable the neutral safety switch has gone bad ? just a few things to think about .. thanks Jerry holler if you need more.

Oh now gotcha .. The Battery connections are either dirty or you have a bad ground . 1st take the battery cables off and clean them good inside and the battery posts then make sure battery is charged up and give it another try .. thanks again Jerry holler if you have more..

wow if you say it started with the cables on and ran but when you took them off that is one of two things either you have a bad battery or your alternator is not charging at all Jerry

04 grand cherokee limited. Started at home fine. Got to gas station and filled up, went to re-start and it clicked once with no restart. Power is fine(lights, radio, power windows, horn) everything works....

You might want to check the starter if you can try tapping it hard with something then try to start it again if it starts then all you need to do is have it changed out if nothing happens then you might also want to check and see if there is a broken fuse link going to the starter I know some vehicles have a fusible link in line with the starter it acts as a fuse but looks like a wire it will burn in half interrupting the voltage to the starter and like you stated everything else will work lights radio horn but the starter will not turn over hope this helps you.

I have a 95 cutlass and sometimes it don't start. I turn the ignition and the lights etc come on but that's it. I don't even get any "click" from the starter likes its trying to start. What I have noticed...

I had the same problem with my 1995 Cutlass Supreme. Finally it would not start at all and I noticed the security light on the dash would not go off after I turned the key. It wound up being the ignition switch. I replaced it and no problems. The only trouble is that your old ignition keys do not work with the new switch.

My 1997 Olds Cutlass Supreme won't turn over

Better have the starter, battery and chargeing system all tested. A starter can cause the problem.

1999 oldsmobile silhouette wont start by igition but self started

The radio and lights usually work when the battery is mostly dead. Check battery and cables to make sure you have a FULL contact. Also do the same with cables and starter. Most parts stores will check battery, altenator, and starter on bench test or in the vehicle for free or extremely cheap. Also you may want to check starter relay for current with an ohmmeter

Lights, horn work but car wont start

Troubleshoot the starter. If your battery is good, then you WILL have power...the lights will work, horn, etc, but....if the starter is toast...you need a starter.

You can jump across the celonoid on the starter. If the engine turns over then your problem is either the celonoid or the starter switch.
