i have a 1999 vw jetta 5 speed and it was spitting and sputtering and then it would be fine for a little while then it would act up again. The check engine light would come onthen it would flash a while but never go completely off. I had it hooked up to a machine and it was diagnosed as having a clogged up catalytic converter or fuel pressure could be low. Help me

I'd really need the DTC number from the computer to help you. If you go to auto zone, or kragen, checker, whatever it is in your town they'll read the code for you for free. Then we can figure out what's the problem. But remember the computer only stores the codes for 2 driving cycles, it'll clear them out if they dont reappear.

I had a very similar problem with my 1999 jetta. Was it raining outside? Was your front grill wet or soaking? It is possible it is a crack in the ignition coil. The water would get into the ignition coil and cause the engine to 'jump' sputter out, die and the engine light wuold come on. Other than that, i don't know. I hope this may help you.

I recently had a similar problem. I got my car scanned and needed a new catalytic converter. If its already starting to spit and sputter, you probably have 3-6 months to get this done. Mine plugged up one day, and just flat out would not drive anymore. This cost of this repair was about (i recommend changing the spark plugs and wires also) $675....pretty costly. could get a lot more expensive the longer u let it go. Does your jetta run cold, in cold temp? (between 25-40 degrees) if so the thermostat probably took out the converter.

1990 Jetta stopped suddenly without warning while driving.

Other possibilities are a blown ignition module, bad coil wire, or broken cam sensor (it's attached to the distributor). There are detailed tests for these in the Bentley, but your mechanic ought to be able to troubleshoot.

This is presuming it's really a no-spark failure. Ground or power faults can disable the computer, the fuel pump circuit can be open, etc.

Hello, I have a 99 silverado z71, I was driving along and all of the sudden it lost power and started to spit and sputter and ended up on the side of the road, sitting there it continued to idle roughly,...

Have the shop check fuel pressure at the fuel rail. Maybe the pump impeller has failed. If fuel pressure is good, your timing chain/belt may have slipped.

My 97 vw jetta won't start when it rains

I would check your spark plug wires, when it's been dry out, start the car and with a spray bottle, spray the plug wires and see if there is any difference, also the coil wire. The smell is most likely from the catalytic converter. Any check engine light?
