Question about 1989 Ford Ranger

****! 1989 Ranger stuck shifter on new clutch!

I just changed the clutch in my 89 Ranger. When I push in on the clutch it starts just fine, but when I let off the clutch pedal the engine dies. The first time I stated it the rear wheels are turning so i shifted it thinking it was in neutral. I tried to shift it to see what would happen. When I shifted forward into what I thought was first the wheels stopped turning and I took my foot off the clutch now I cant get it to shift out of that gear and when I let my foot off the clutch the engine dies. Any idea what could cause this...I give up?

Somehow you have it stuck in two gears. If I remember correctly your shift mechanism is inside the unit. If so, you will need to remove the trans and the cover, then re-position the shift forks. If you get lucky, you may be able to free it up by wiggling the shift lever but I doubt it.
Do not run it 'till you manage to free it up or you can break a gear. If you removed shifter when working on it, first check that you put it back in correctly before tearing everything apart!

i assume this is a manual transmission , sounds like the clutch may have broken up , causing the flywheel not to turn when the starter is operated , will need to be seen by a mechanic

You mean the shift linkage? Its on the drivers side of the transmission, from the shifter forward to the transmission.

Have an assistant push in on the clutch while you observe the function of the cluth throwout bearing lever, it may be that the throwout bearing fork lever is not on its pivot point or is out of adjustment, you should be able to rotate the rear tires when the clutch is pushed in if not the throw out bearing and fork assembly either was not put in corectly or you did not bleed out the air from the slave cylinder.

89 ranger wont start

Neutral safety switch is my best guess (about 98% sure on this one) It is located somewhere on the transmission (sorry about the vagueness). It prevents you from starting your vehicle in gear. If left unplugged the truck will not start at all. All I can include is a picture of the top (connection) on the switch if it is of any help.
