2000 dodge intrepid won't start

First - car would not start when key turned all lights came on and if held would eventually start

Then turn key and nothing happens no lights but the ignition key beeps

most recent i was switching the fuses and it started to turn over - it then started to turn the starter but would not stop when I turned the key the starter kept spinning and would not engage.

Now it is back to turn the key it beeps but no dash lights except clock

    Thanks for the response.

The battery is now - I am not sure about the ground cable

New status - I changed the fuse the car started but the starter again would not disengaged - it finally disenegaged when it was practically burning up

Will the ground cable cause the starter to not disengege or do you think if I change the starter the problem will be fixed as far as the failure to disengage?

Thank you - I will be changing the starter tomorrow and see if it fixes he problem - My only concern then would be if there was a relay causing the problem but the starter is preety old and the car has 200K miles on it so it could easily be the starter

    Thanks again

If the key is returning to  the 'Run' position as it should, then either a relay controlling the solenoid or the solenoid itself is hanging up. The heavy contacts that send power to the starter can develop rough surfaces that can temporarily weld themselves together causing the starter to run on even though the engine is running and the key has returned to the proper position. There is also a spring that should normally help return the solenoid's contacts to their 'off' position that may be weakened.

Check cables to battery.if battery is 5years or older replace.
a bad ground cable and a weak battery will cause the starter to do as stated.

interesting.was car running with starter engaged?or just turning over without starting.

over heated starter yes change it, it's old like you said.but what caused your issue in the first place is what you need to check out also.

why starter stays engaged if overheated which happened to me my fault of course, bushing where gear throws out will move when metal expands causing rod to come out more that gear spins on there for it won't return properly and yes starter could've been fixed but I already purchased new.85 Audi 4000 quattro had to go through fender well to change what a pain.

also have 90 sable had new starter put in before purchase found out why person sold car.starter stuck on without starting, ended up changing a burnt out alternator due to always charging junk battery, changed battery and cables, bad ground caused major problems a junk battery and cable caused starter to stay on even with ignition off.just enough amps to engage but would not disengage when the last two things were done no more problems since.and it did not ruin starter, which saved some bucks.

2000 Dodge Intrepid, when I turn on the car the lights flicker but it won't turn over. no clicking sound. The cd player starts making noises.

It sounds like the battery is flat, this could be because the alternator has not charged it or something has drained the battery or the battery is faulty! What lights are flickering? We're any dash lights on prior to you not being able to start the car?

I have a 2000 dodge intrepid. The alarm never worked on it. We bought it used and all of a sudden when we go to unlock the door it turns on. Now the car won't start. I've looked online for answers and...

The 2000 Dodge Intrepid is equipped with an alarm system that is triggered when unauthorized entry is attempted. In some situations, such as having the Intrepid valet parked or when it is being serviced by a mechanic, the alarm system needs to be disarmed so it doesn't go off. Disarming the alarm will prevent it from being activated until it is armed again.
Difficulty: Moderate Instructions

  1. 1 Insert the key into the ignition.
  2. 2 Turn the ignition switch to "ON." Do not start the engine.
  3. 3 Press and hold the valet/override button within five seconds of turning the ignition on. The valet button is located beneath the steering column.
  4. 4 Release the valet/override button after the security indicator light turns off.
  5. 5 Turn the ignition switch off.

have to do it in this order

2000 Dodge Intrepid Wont Start

first of all, check your code to see what the car computer shows. To do that , insert the key in the ignition and switch it on three time within 2 seconds and the third time live the key in the on position. All the instrument panel lights will lite and the oddometer will display the fault code that may br the cause for your car not starting. goood luck.

1994 Dodge Intrepid clicks before starting

Weak battery or flaky starter solenoid. Check the condition of the wires betwixt the battery and the starter solenoid first. Also check the ground wire(s).
