How much would it cost approximately to have this problem fixed? I have one that does the exact same thing.

I have a 1991 pontiac 6000 that had the same problem a few years ago. In fact, this problem is common on the cutlass and other similar cars. The most common root cause is a bad TCC (torque converter clutch) solenoid. This part is fairly inexpensive to replace (approx. $20 part) and is located in the side pan on the transmission. You will also need a side pan gasket and some fluid to replace any that leaks. The TCC is designed to lock up when the engine is warm and cruising in high gear (this saves gas like having another gear). If the TCC solenoid is bad, it can cause the TC to stay locked up when you slow down. This is similar to using the brake to stop a manual shift car without depressing the clutch. The result is a car that shakes a bit then quits running.

A quick way to confirm this is the problem is to unplug the connector on the front edge of the transmission housing (about one foot behind the radiator). This will prevent the TCC from locking. You will also notice that the speedometer does not work while this is disconnected so be careful to stay under the speed limit.

Does the vehicle restart and die when you put it in gear. If answer is yes then you need a torque converter clutch solenoid (TCC) or a brake light switch. The brake light switch cancels the TCC at a slow down or stop.. If it doesn't cancel it you will stall out. If your vehicle restarts and dies once you put it in gear then its the TCC. If none of these symptons fit your vehicle get back to me .

Car runs fine when cold, when warm it stalls

My first guess is a vacuum leak or maybe a defective IAC. Tests need to be run to narrow the search down.

1990 Pontiac 6000 2.5 after driving, car stalls when put in gear.

You need to replace the TCC solenoid under the side cover pan of the transmission. You can also unplug the wires that go to the transmission in the front. After that it will not go into overdrive but it will stay running at stop lights untill you have it repaired.
