Question about 1996 Dodge Intrepid

1996 intrepid, replaced intake gaskets twice and still smokes

I have a 1996 dodge intrepid with a 3.5 litre engine. at first it was fine just a high idle. sounded like there was a vaccum leak so i dug for it coldnt find it so i tried a little starting fluid and it was the intake gaskets so i replaced them and it was ok till i put coolant back in it. it started smoking. so i let it idle for about 10 minutes and it got worse. i thought i had just had a little coolant get in the cylinder when i took intake off. then i went ahead and replaced the intake gaskets again and it didnt seem to help again. tho the first time i did it i used a spray on silicone and i should have knew better. the second time i did it i used regular silicone to fix it with and it still did the same thing. im going to do a compression check and see where im standing on it. but thought if someone else had the same problem. maybe they could help me.

Intake gaskets for this dodge are not all that expensive. It does sound as if youre getting coolant into your combustion chamber. You would do well to THOROUGHLY clean all mating surfaces off and install a proper intake gasket. But if you must use gasket maker make certain again that your surfaces are clean and once applied and the intake properly torqued allow the gasket maker to set up at least overnight to ensure a good seal. Under pressure your engine will make a tiny leak big quick if the gasket material is not set up well. Also, use a straight edge and feeler gauge set to check corner to corner for any warpage which would allow gasket material to "blow" away under operation. The best advice anyone can give you is to spend $15-$20 on a Hains manual and follow step by step to the letter the advice therein. This manual will easily and professionally guide you into all repairs and tips you will likely ever need to resolve your issues now and the ones to come. Your common Advance auto parts or O Reillys automotive and even Autozone are excellent and handy locations to find these manuals and are WORTH THEIR WEIGHT IN GOLD. Youll also do well to study this book and further familiarize yourself with your Intrepid so that when problems do arise youll have a good idea of where to start. And the fault symptom index with direction at the begining of the book is just icing on the cake. Step by step photos lead the way. You will not regret the purchase and will save you a great deal of time and confusion. I know I love em. Good Luck!!!

What does it mean if there is oil in my coolant reservoir

oil too low!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! have some change your oil & filter immediately !!! drain radiator & coolant reservoir , refill w/ fresh 50/50 coolant , white smoke is not exactly a good thing ! it could mean coolant is mixing w/ oil , because of a possible leak from a bad gasket either from intake manifold or head gasket !!! water pump would not cause this ! I would bet on a gasket leak given the age of the car . 2000 ! 13 years old, how was it maintained, intake gaskets are cheaply made, head gaskets are made well ! so, my bet, goes to the intake manifold gasket !!!!!!good luck kristle !

01 dodge intrepid blowin white smoke

if its white smoke and its not due to a drop in outside air temp then this indicates that the motor is burning engine coolant,,which could be caused by a bad head gasket, cracked head, leaking intake gasket.have a block test done to see if there is combustion gases in the coolant.

After car is warm it rev's high like it is not shifting in to next gear is that a transmission issue

Could be a vaccum leak or Intake manifold leak. If you spray brake clean around the intake manifold and the idle returns to normal you have found the leak. Do not use water as this could hydrolock the engine causing further damage.

1995 Dodge ram 1500 V-8 5.9 litre 4x4 short bed is feels like it is bumping when the truck shifts into cruising gear and RPMs drop truck smmoths out when you speed up bumping goes away if you shift...

Perform compression check between cylenders #1 and #3. These are right next to each other.
You might get away with a head gasket replacement, if the compression between these cylenders is the same, indicating a blown head gasket between cyl.#1 and #3 not valves which will give different readins between these cylenders.

How often should I bleed air from the cooling system?

check your oil and make sure you dont ahve a blown head gasket and that your thermostat is good (throw it in boiling water and see if it opens), and if you are losing water/coolant with no drips or puddles than it may be leaking in a cylinder which means bad head gasket as well

97 dodge Intrepid with Cooling Problem

If you've already tested the stat by placing it in very hot water to verify that it does open ,then it might be that the high pressure reservoir cap leaks. With the engine cold, check the under side of the cap for cracks in its gasket . My 3.5L had a frozen stat and a leaking cap at the same time however the cap problem wasn't evident until I replaced the stat. By the way - It's always a good idea to test new thermostats before installing them . I had to learn that the hard way.
