2000 GMC Sierra cranks wont start

Driving with cruise at 70 mph, engine died. I coasted to find a pull off, before it stopped it restarted. Drove another 10 miles and it kind of lurched a few times, then died altogether. Will crank but not start. Engine service light came on, And i have only oil pressure gauge when crankin will work, and volt meter says 9-10 volts.... Did I just lose an alternater or battery? I remember seeing 14 volts on voltmeter when t was running.

Most likely not the battery or alternator. Other wise it wouldn't have crank over. Start with the basics. Check for fuel and fuel pressure and spark. Fuel pressure is of course the fuel pump. Spark would be the crank sensor behind the harmonic balancer. If you have both, then look at timing. Just a note.. Modern cars will run on 8 volts. That is the bare minimum.

It sounds to me like fuel pump isn't working or whatever is wrong is fuel/spark/throttle body related. The volts you are measuring are in a vehicle that is cranking but not starting so you cannot diagnose alternator and remember if it doesn't start your battery will lose power with each crank.
Did you try spraying quickstart in throttle body?

Hello, 9-10 volts is not enough to keep a modern vehicle running. Taking in consideration the age and model of this truck, it could easily be an alternator failure.
I hope this helps.

Hello again, I don't know why you gave me an inappropriate rating for my answer. An alternator failure WILL do what you described. Did you used jumper cables to try to restart it? If so, maybe you blew an ECM fuse etc. You did ask if an alternator failure would do this.

RE worded Hesitation issues on occasions tonight drove 15 miles stopped put in gas. Drove off got about 1000 yards engine just died had to cost to a space tried to start cranks but wont run?

Do basic testing. When in failed mode, check for spark. I suspect ignition module or coil, as these parts fail when hot and when you turn off running engine it gets hotter before it cools. Hard to diagnose because when you remove module to test, by the time you get to a parts store to test it's really cool again. Make them run test three times and tap with a pencil as you test.

It sounds like your alternator might be starting to go bad and the Battery Light is coming on because it is not charging the battery correctly. Have your Alternator checked with a volt meter, it should be reading 13 to 14 volts if working correctly. If not, replace your alternator.

Engine dies at highway cruising speeds

have fuel pump pressure checked 50-60 Psi at idle 60PSI with vac line diconnected from pressure regulator. If that checks out check for ingation switch failier may be keeps car power on but telling ecm that it has been turned from run. Also have a wave form done on fuel pump as it can still have good pressure but not be fully funtional elctricly. if you have acsses to a tech 2 have it checked for codes as it may not have turned on the light but may have stored a code

When you say "cranked but would not turn over" I assume you mean it turned over but would not crank. Otherwise, it does not make sense.

Assuming that, I would replace the fuel filter. It is a cheap part and easy to install. What happens is dirt gets in the filter and stops the car because it is not getting fuel. After sitting a while, the fuel dains out of the filter along with the debris and it works well until it happens again (usually when you are low on fuel). It is a cheap fix and probably will solve your problem.
