Connector is under right side dash under heater box. It may be tucked under carpet. Wire is tan w/ black stripe. Base timing is 0 TDC with engine warm and connector unplugged.

Need tune specs on '89 5.7 GMC

Spark plugs are set at 0.035 inch.
Ignition timing is set at 0 degrees BTDC. The computer then controls the timing from there. There will be a wire that you unplug before you set the timing, then once you have verified that the timing is at 0 degrees, then reconnect the wire and you're done.

95 GMC K1500 350... replaced distributor...timed it at 0 with computer unplugged... plugged it back in and timing changed by few degrees, engine surges and runs poorly. Checked plugwire route for...

ok ran great before changes. right. you say unpluged computor to set timing.. yes.. do you mean the plug on the firewall passenger side that looks like a fuse holder kindof..?? (set timing connector ) (tan /blk wire)
did it run good during timing proceedure??? wont be MAP that is engine vacume has nothing to do with what you have replaced.
proceedure is to set timing . shut off engine , plug in.. then restart.
yes timing moves as per ECM specs. check that timing did no get out one tooth when you replaced distributor. retime . restart

How to set timing on a 1997 v6 4.3l gmc vortec engine need to know specs. I am installing a new motor in the truck.

On the drives side long the fire wall on the harness, will be one wire from all the other ones, it could be brown or tan, disconnect the that wire, start engine and set timing, turn engine off reconnect wire and check timing again, should be advance now, also some times that will cause an engine light to come on, just disconnect battery for 15 sec. and computer is reset.

Where can i get the specs for ignition timing on a 1989 GMC K1500 Pickup

Note: The Timing Connector breaks out of the engine wiring harness conduit adjacent to the distributer. It is a single wire sealed connector that has a tan with black stripe lead.
Note: Timing specifications are listed on the Vehicle Emissions Control Information label under the hood. Always follow the Vehicle Emissions Control Information label procedures first before using the following procedure. PROCEDURE:
Set timing under the following conditions:
  • Normal operating temperature.
  • Air cleaner installed.
  • A/C "OFF".
  • Transmission in neutral.
  • Disconnect SET TIMING connector (tan/black wire) located in the harness close to the distributor. DO NOT disconnect the 4 wire connector at the distributor.
  • Connect timing light and adjust as necessary by loosening hold down bolt and rotating distributor.
Base Timing, with Manual and Automatic Transmissions: 00(TDC)
  • Tighten hold down and recheck the timing.
  • Stop the engine and connect SET TIMING connector.
  • Clear ECM trouble code by disconnecting ECM power source.

I need timing specs

Your timing specs situation: you will need timing light first. Then you must jumper wire connector located usually under passenger dash on right side of fire wall. You may need to consult a Haynes manual or other good resource to accurately locate it. This must be done in order to get the computer to go into base timing mode. If not the computer is constantly changing timing based on information it receives from input devices. Engine must be warm, A/C turned off, in park etc. I'm sure there is a red timing mark that you should be aiming to hit with the light and should line up with the timing indicator on outside of plastic cover right next to crank shaft pulley. Also make sure you are connecting your light to the number one cylinder which is the longest spark plug wire. Anyways you will know that you have correctly installed jumper wire under the passenger dash because after you start the vehicle check engine light will be on. And don't forget to remove that jumper wire after you are finished because if not your vehicle will always run in base timing mode.
