I have a 99' Grand Prix. The temp guage needle moves up and down suggesting it is getting hot. Fluids are full. I thought about changing the temp gauge sending unit and flushing. Is there another answer?
Yes I have been adding fluid but do not see a leak. The thermostat looks hard to get to. Loks like the intake manifold is blocking access. Is there an easy to get to the thermostat to change. could it be a water pump?

i have that exact same problem, ive replaced the water pump and the thermostat, but i HAVE to have a slow leak somewhere.. because i have the refill with water every 2 days or so... but the needle floats up and down too ha... it also affects my heating and ac some how

Have you been adding coolant ? if the level is low you can experience this problem , or it could be a thermostat thats getting to the end of it's life !

Either air is trapped in the heater matrix of it is blocked with gunge. Check to see if there is any water in the oil, as this would suggest a blown cylinder head gasket. If no oil in the water, your thermostat make need replacing. Check to see if the temp gauge is constant and where the needle normally sits.
Change the sensor, but it will run hot like that if you are not moving fluids across it. It is basically measuring air temp for a minute. Could be a totally stuck thermostat. Change both. That cooling system is critical on a cherokee.
If your temp gauge has only the cold (C) or hot (H) letters then the operating range would be the width of the needle under 1/2 way between c and h. If it remains steady at slightly over 1/2 way that would be just the setting of the gauge. How to get to know where the needle would sit at a specific position in relation to water temp. Do the following Remove the temp sender unit and attach an earth wire to the body of the unit to earth. Place the sender unit in a container of water up to the threads .Put a mercury thermometer in the container beside the sender unit Apply heat to the container and watch the gauge needle move in relation to the thermometer reading. Operating temp will be about 80 degrees C on the thermometer and that would be about 1/2 way on the gauge.
YOur guage is faulty. Your will need to replace your guage if it stays in the hot position even when your car is off and your key is out of the ignition. If it only rises to hot when you turn the key to the run position, you have a wire between your guage and your temp sending unit that has been gounded out. Usually this happens when a person opens their hood to add oil or perform some minor maintenance on the engine and inadvertantly bumps the sensor or switch or wiring. This causes about 65% of these minor issues people incur, but if it does stay all the way up with your key out of the ignition switch, then you will need to replace your temp guage.
replace the thermostat,, and make sure that the fan engages , just because the fluids don't boil over doesn't mean the temp isn't to high, if your saying that the temp gauge is stuck on the hot setting, and doesn't move even when the car is cold,, thats a different problem,, if thats the case whats the make , model , and year
This is an electrical problem. Clean the battery cables and it may fix it. Or it may need a new thermostat. This is 2 common problems with the Grand Prix
the temperature sending unit on a 97 grand prix 3800 gt(which is also the coolant temperature sensor) is not accurate. the sending unit part of this sensor only sends info to the guage on the dash. the coolant sensor part sends info to the computer of the car. it is located under thermostat and somewhat difficult to get at. i had put a brand new one in and my temperature on my dash is all over the place---even with good thermostat and properly bled system. when i hook up a scanner to my computer, the coolant sensor is sending the computer(ecu??) what seems to be the right temp. anywhere from 194 degrees to 217 when hot. the guage however on dash go from 160 to 260 in less than 2 minutes.
