Question about 1995 Pontiac Firebird
Sounds like the nylon gear in the motor is stripped out, here is a website that sells metal gears to replace them and a step by step guide on installing them. http://www.bfranker.badz28.com/headlightfix/index.htm#headlightgearfailures

You have to make sure the covers are not out of alinement or rubbing the sides and I am not for sure but the old corvettes had a rubber stop so they wouldn't make that noise but also here is a place to replace them or get parts they only sell GM parts:
1-800-292-1032 Schram auto and truck parts
