Re: Drivers side door will not open from the outside
Check your outside door handle to see if it is broken if not adjust the rod to the handle, they are adjustable, make the rod longer,to do this unhook the rod from the door handle and screw the adjuster counter clockwise one turn and try it, if still wont work give it another turn, 2 turns should fix it.

It sounds like you have either broken the inside door release or dropped the connecting bar to the latch. If you pull the inside handle, can you see a broken tab? Check the passenger side to see if they look the same when you pull the handle. The handle is spring loaded so it will always return back to its original position even if the connecting bar to the door latch is not connected.
It sounds like you might have two door latches that are faulty.... But you can try disconnecting the battery for 10 minutes and reconnect to see if that solves it. Sometimes VW's need their memory reset, have seen weird problems happen and this fixes it a lot of the time.
The cable runs from the latch to the handle, it sounds like the cable broke off one end or fell off,
this truck uses cables instead of metal rods to open the latch, remove the door panel and see if the cable fell off handle area or latch,, the cable operates the inside door handle and sometimes the outside handle but very rare that it operates the out side handle to open door.
My friend just had this problem and he reached in and pulled the inside door handle back as far as it would go, and then let it go, allowing it to 'snap' back. For some reason this fixed it. We have no idea why. By doing this on one door, both rear door locks freed up and the rear locks are now working. Before, both rear locks were stuck and you could not open the doors from the inside nor the outside. Not sure why it works, but maybe it will work for you!
Sounds like the release rod came off of either the main latch or the inside release handle. My guess would be the latch since I don't see many problems with the inner handles. To check you have to remove the door panel. Follow the rod to the latch area. There should be a plastic type of clip that the rod came off of in the general area of the end of the rod. The rod may just push back into place.
