1997 Expedition Oil Leak At top Right of Engine

I have had a small oil leak for quite a while, but the last 1 month is has become so bad that smoke comes billowing out of the hood when i park it after driving. It does not seem to leak while parked or even cranked in the driveway. I have taken it to a mechanic, it is in the shop now, but I am just wondering if there is anyone out there that has had the same prob?

Did you do the work yourself? I thought that the headgasket was a really expensive thing to fix???

Your valve-cover gaskets have failed. A clogged PCV valve may have caused the leak or made it worse.

The mechanic will likely replace them for about two hundred bucks.

Good luck.

    To shanksa...

you have a leaking valve-cover gasket, NOT a head gasket. The valve-cover is what covers the valve train up top. The oil gets pushed up there by the oil pump to lubricate the rods and rockers. Because it's a lot easier to get to than a head gasket, the labor cost is much less. Yes...I have replaced one before.

On the other hand, a head gasket is what's between the upper and lower engine block. When one of those fails, it usually allows antifreeze to get mixed into the oil and exhaust. The result is white smoke from the tailpipe which gets worse as the engine warms up. By that time, horsepower is in the gutter. Replacing a head gasket is a lot of work, so the cost is high.

    To spike...

Sounds like you got your valve-cover gasket replaced. There's no way you paid only $100 for a head gasket.

    Peace.

Yea I have had this problem with my 98 ford escort, The reasoning for mine was that my head gasket was blown, it was an easy fix for me but it did end up costing me around $100. PLEASE rate me!!

White smoke out of the exhaust means a coolant leak in the engine. When you accellerate hard and get that it could be the head gasket is leaking. The bad thing is that coolant leaks can ruin the catalytic converter too. You are looking at several thousand in repair bills.

I have a 2001 Saturn L. Oil is leaking, it is not the head gasket. Tore engine apart and replaced gaskets. Stopped leaking for about 6-7 months and it started to leak again. Did oil change last week...

If you have no visible signs of oil leaking out of the engine then the oil is being burnt. By visible leaking I mean a small puddle of oil under the car after having been left overnight. This can be cured by replacing shaft seals and gaskets. Burning oil is visible as smoke under deceleration (no throttle) and under full power(flooring it). This is due to worn/old valve stem seals(smoke under deceleration) and worn oil rings(smoke under acceleration) This can only be cured by a major engine overhaul or engine replacement. Bear in mind that losing a pint of oil in 1000 miles is acceptable.

I have a 1997 Saturn SC2, it has an oil leak and is smoking bad

The smoke sounds like its burning off any oil accumulating in the exhaust, and only goes down to the point where the crankshaft stops splashing in the oilpan.

Engine oil becomes less

Unfortunately this is common in many high mileage vehicles and there are many possible reasons. There all slow leaks, it could be seeping through the piston rings, valves or internal gasket(s) etc. This problem is very difficult to find. The car can burn the oil with no signs. It'll only smoke if enough oil is burned at once. I know people who just keep an eye on the oil level and continue to refill it. It is time for an engine overhaul, another engine or vehicle. There is no easy fix sorry.

Hard to find oil leak.

yes if the repair was something related to the oil leak,it would be covered by the 12 / 12,000 mile warranty from the dealer... if they performed the work..when taking back to the dealer, ask them to use an engine dye to pinpoint the leak if they cannot see the obvious..theres many possibilities of an oil leak from the back o the cyl head, there is several gaskets that can be leaking, the dye would be the best or looking at it from below o a lift..if they performed the work they shouldnt have a problem looking at it...sometimes just a few pair of eyes helps as well... from different angles.
