I have had a small oil leak for quite a while, but the last 1 month is has become so bad that smoke comes billowing out of the hood when i park it after driving. It does not seem to leak while parked or even cranked in the driveway. I have taken it to a mechanic, it is in the shop now, but I am just wondering if there is anyone out there that has had the same prob?

White smoke out of the exhaust means a coolant leak in the engine. When you accellerate hard and get that it could be the head gasket is leaking. The bad thing is that coolant leaks can ruin the catalytic converter too. You are looking at several thousand in repair bills.
If you have no visible signs of oil leaking out of the engine then the oil is being burnt. By visible leaking I mean a small puddle of oil under the car after having been left overnight. This can be cured by replacing shaft seals and gaskets. Burning oil is visible as smoke under deceleration (no throttle) and under full power(flooring it). This is due to worn/old valve stem seals(smoke under deceleration) and worn oil rings(smoke under acceleration) This can only be cured by a major engine overhaul or engine replacement. Bear in mind that losing a pint of oil in 1000 miles is acceptable.
you need to replace your top gasket i had the same problem with my tazz the car decided to start over heating and used alot of water so take it away and have it fixed before your problem becomes bigger and i payed R1000 to have my car fixed properly
Unfortunately this is common in many high mileage vehicles and there are many possible reasons. There all slow leaks, it could be seeping through the piston rings, valves or internal gasket(s) etc. This problem is very difficult to find. The car can burn the oil with no signs. It'll only smoke if enough oil is burned at once. I know people who just keep an eye on the oil level and continue to refill it. It is time for an engine overhaul, another engine or vehicle. There is no easy fix sorry.
yes if the repair was something related to the oil leak,it would be covered by the 12 / 12,000 mile warranty from the dealer... if they performed the work..when taking back to the dealer, ask them to use an engine dye to pinpoint the leak if they cannot see the obvious..theres many possibilities of an oil leak from the back o the cyl head, there is several gaskets that can be leaking, the dye would be the best or looking at it from below o a lift..if they performed the work they shouldnt have a problem looking at it...sometimes just a few pair of eyes helps as well... from different angles.
yea i had the same problem, my last mechanic didnt tighten the top where d sprak plugs go in so it was leakin oil all they way down to the bottom where the exhaust runs and was smokin because of that... had it tightned and no longer ne smoke
It could aslo be the exausht manifold leak i just last month had to have that fixed. run your car for some time then stop and check underneath see if it is leaking towards back end of engine or if you can hear a hissing sound fron middle top of engine
oil leak at back of block thats spirting on hot engine block
bad oil rings in block
head or head gasket worn and cracked check the oil if chocolate brown then this would be it
a/c preasure line busted or a/c locked up
water line busted on hot engine or small water leak
bad emmission components
these are the things i can think of off the top of my that could give this reaction in vehicle since im not there in person to see vehicle this will have to be what i think
