Headlights and dash lights do not turn on

My column switch does NOT turn on my dashboard, lowbeams or headlights on anymore. My turn signals and highbeams DO turn on though. All relays and fuses appear to be working fine. Any ideas?

I would go with the simplist of solutions and suggest that the switch is bad.

A component in the central porcessing unit (CPU) was bad. I thought it was the switch too after checking all the relays and fuses.Turns out my car's electrical system is actually a 1996. Once we we able to look at the right electrical diagram, it was pretty obvious.

Mind you... the body of my car is 1997 and came with a 1997 manual. We didn't realize it was a 1996 until we look up the vin number so for anyone having the same problem may want to double check their year as well.

I have a 97 nissan altima and my lowbeams dont work but my highbeams do and i already replaced headlights today?? what can i do

Could be your dimmer switch gone bad, that controls your low and high beams, the contacts for the low beam is usually the one that goes bad first, the high beam contact isn't used much.
My Oldsmobile had the same problem, only high beams worked, replace the dimmer switch and fixed the problem. Unfortunately with my car replacing the dimmer switch gave me a hard time. Most dimmer switches are located in the steering column underneath the dash board and a little hard to get at. Dimmer switch costs about 12 to 15 dollars, very cheap but very hard to reach and replace. The switch it self is activated with a small metal rod going up and down next to the steering column and into your turn signal lever, when you pull up it pushes the metal rod down to activate your high or low beam lights.

All lights work except head lights after I changed turn signal switch

Is your headlight switch on the steering column, or on the dash? If it's the column, you may not have connected them back up good. If on the dash, you could check for a burned "fusible link" right aroun d the battery connections. If that looks alright, and you are sure the bulbs are good, then you might need a new headlight switch. Did they just go out after you changed turn signal switch? Your dimmer switch is on that same switch, I believe. Recheck your connections. Hope this helps.

Where is the lowbeam headlight switch located

depending on the year, older ones are located on the steering column, to the left, smaller white switch with a rod going to it. newer ones are in the turn signal switch itself.

I only get highbeams, not lowbeams. Daytime running lights work fine. People at Canadian Tire say it is most likely the relays. I lack the technical know how to know what those look like or where to find...

Power for the headlights goes directly from the battery to the headlight switch, then to the dip/flash switch on the column.

The fact that the high beams are working but not the low beam says the problem is somewhere between the switch on the column and the headlights.

Either the switch has failed, or there's a broken wire or open connector in the wiring harness.

The wiring for the low beams is a blue wire with red tracer. Check the wires coming off the steering column with a voltmeter to see if the problem is with the switch or the wiring forward of the steering column.

If you have power at the connector harness coming off the switch, then keep working forward to find the open circuit.

My dash lights all go out when i try and put the turn signal on. which arnt working either. car runs fine otherwise.

Your turn signal switch is multifunctioning (controls cuise, wipers, dimmer, etc.). Your dash lights are wired into the same circuit (when you turn your headlights on, the dash lights should come on). Try replacing the turn signal switch there at your steering column. Takes about 20 minutes to install and around $60.

Headlights

If you already check the dimmer definetly you will have to remove the dashboard area where the indicator is and replace those light bulbs they are tiny so careful and first check your auto parts store for correct number.luck!

Loose contact of dashboard light

This is usually a loosing proposition,  if the switch is failing, it is unlikely that cleaning the contacts will work long if at all.  Unless you time is worth less than $10 an hour, better off to get a new switch if that's what is bad.  Check for problems with a dimmer switch (if present)  for dashboard lights.
