Aperently it shuts down because of voltage fluctuations while starting..the battery goes from 13.6-8 down to around 10 volts or 9.5 which most electronics cant operate on..try this..leave the radio off until startup is done.. and for power come off of the lighter circuit that stays on all the time.. use the radios power lead and the memory together with a 5 amp fuse and a separate switch for power until the car is running..the only drawback is resetting the clock and station memory each time..

There are only 2 things you can try to fix this yourself: turn off the engine and open the driver side door (to turn the radio off). Wait 5 minutes, start your car.
If that does not solve it, turn off your engine, disconnect the car battery, wait about 5 minutes. Reconnect the battery (negative pole first - black connector) and try your radio again.
If neither one of these two fix your problem, I am afraid only a GM service center or dealership can fix the problem. The Cobalt is notorious for all kinds of electrical issues.
Thanks for using the fixya forums!

I had a similar problem on a 2001 GM product. The problems all stemmed from a worn out key. Keys are made from softer metals so that they wear out before the expensive cylinder does. Debris had collected in the cylinder preventing ANY key from turning it - corrected that with compressed air. Replaced the key at the dealer by providing the VIN and my ID w/registration - $10.00. Kept the old keys because they still worked for opening the trunk. Try it, I bet your symptoms and fix actions are very similar, at least, I hope so. Regards.
