Those shouldn't be too hard to change. You'll need:
3/8 drive ratchet 6 inch extension 5/8 inch spark plug socket gap tool for spark plugs (Autozone usually has them at the counter) anti seize compound torque wrench for tapered seat spark plug (beam style)
First you need to remove the spark plug wires from end of the spark plugs. To remove a wire/boot grab the boot at the top and twist it a couple of times to break the boot loose from the plug. Don't pull the boot out by the wire. Once it is loose pull up on the boot to remove the wire/boot. Take note of which wire goes where. If you have any damaged wires, wires that have white flash burns, boots that are contaminated with engine oil, or boots that are damaged you should replace the wires/boots as a set.
Put together your ratchet, extension, and socket. Remove the spark plugs by turning CCW.
Using the gap tool make sure that the gaps are set correctly on your plugs. All platinum and iridium plugs come pre-gapped and should be inspected before you purchase them at the counter. The gap specifications should be on the underhood sticker. It is probably .044 inch. If they are platinum or iridium plugs, it isn't recommended to use a coin or wire gap tool because you may damage the center electrode or ground strap points.
Apply a tiny amount of anti seize to the spark plug threads. The anti seize will aid in installation and removal later on. Carefully tighten the spark plug. If the plug you are installing is equipped with a crush washer, seat the plug, then tighten about 1/4 turn to crush the washer. If you are installing a tapered seat plug, tighten the plug with a torque wrench to specifications provided by the vehicle or plug manufacturer.
This is purely related to a primary fault in the fuel system but the ignition also needs to be checked.
So check the fuel filter remove carburetor and check the fuel chambers and ports for dirt and clogging. Check the fuel jets and see if these are clean.'
Now check the spark plugs, the gap and the spark intensity, if not check the HT coil, the HT wires.
Now the tuning requires the attention of an expert as when you tune the engine the condition will be evident. The fuel/air mixture and the ignition timing must allow the engine to idle with even motion.
On raising of the RPM the engine must come up in power easily.
I am sure if these two setting are in order the engine must work efficietly. However is the engine has clocked more miles, then the compression ratio , the valve settings must be checked.
The gap depends on which motor you have and what kind of plug. Irecommend staying with the original brand and number. My 2002 Impala w/ 3.8L has a 0.060" gap on it's plugs. According to Autozone, the gap for the 2005 3.4L or 3.8L is also 0.060".
I can not remember if it is equipted with a mass air flow but I think it is. A lot of times they will go bad and will not set a code. They will cause a car to bog down like it is not getting enough fuel.Hope this helps.
the spark plugs wires are directly located on top of the engine and the spark plugs are down inside the holes in the valve cover itself. I believe there are also 2 coils on top of the engine, which hide two of the spark plug wires which are attached directly to the underside of each coil, remove the coil pull it upward carefully and you will find the spark plugs for those two in the hole underneath the coil for each one. If you decide to replace the plugs, make sure to check the spark plug gap even if they tell you they are pre-gapped as pre-gapped spark plugs are usually gapped for more than one particular car and it may be incorrectly gapped for your specific vehicle. If you decide to also replace the spark plug wires, you will have to purchase the spark plug wires for the underside of each coil seperately because most local auto parts stores only sell 2 spark plug wires in the set that go onto the non-coil attached wires and plugs, and you have to purchase the coil spark plug wires seperately. So all in all you should have 4 spark plug wires, 2 that attach directly underneath the 2 coils, then 2 regular type wires that run to the other spark plugs. If you look at the valve cover and see the wires, you will see what i am saying better. Just don't forget to ask the autoparts store the spark plug gap recommended for you car, and adjust the gap on the plugs as needed. good luck.
