Question about 2002 Saturn L-Series

1 Answer

02 saturn sl1, auto trans slips/leaks

The car has around 82,000 miles on it, I havent had any problems with the trans at all until about 3 weeks ago, i pulled out of my parking space, started driving down the street and noticed the car started making a high pitched whining sound. I knew that meant it had low or no trans fluid, but i checked it a week before and it was full. Pulled over, sure enough no fluid, it was all over the bottom of the car, and there was a trail going from my house to where i drove. You could see the puddle in my parking spot, it seems it dumped the fluid when i put the car in reverse. I took it to the mechanic at my job, he said there was a hose that had come out, he reconnected it and changed the o-rings around the connection and it hasnt dumped the fluid like that since, however it still seems to leak when the engine is running, and its not a constant leak it only leaks here and there but only when running....also ive been noticing the trans starting to shift weird and maybe slip...not sure if its actually slipping but when im accelerating its not smooth at all, the rpms go up as normal then all of a sudden drop then come back up

When I first start my car the transmission works fine. after the car has ran for a short amount of time (around 5 miles) the reverse slips and the car won't move backwards. In the afternoon on my 30 mile...

Sounds like it's on it's way out.
You will soon need to repair or replace it.
Automatic transmissions start at @$2000 & up these days, mostly up.
If you're at all handy - they are not that difficult to replace with one from a recycling yard like Pick & Pull... if you can safely get under the car.
RWD R&R is a bit easier than FWD R&R. 4WD gets a little complicated - but still doable...if you're handy with tools around cars.

1996 saturn sl1 transmission slips in 3 and 4 gears.

The fluid and speed sensor did not really do anything to solve your slipping problem. If it slipped before it could be that there are chips/breaks in the teeth on the gears or it could be that the clutch is not connecting when it gets into higher gears. May need a new tranny or clutch.

two places to check.... the water pump or one of the frost plugs has failed. what colour is the exhaust smoke ?

the other problems could be from the engine overheating so much

2002 saturn sl1 automatic transmission slips/leaks..

what you might be seeing is the fluid that leaked before still coming off the transmission. is the level staying steady ?

it might be slipping or you are more focused on how the transmission shifts now then you were before.

there is a product i have tried on slipping transmissions and it's made by lucas (can't remember the exact name) it basically thickens the transmission fluid to prevent slipping. according to the label it would not void the warrenty (if you have any remaining on that car).
