Question about 1987 Pontiac Grand Am

1 Answer

98 grandam grinding / ac compressor??

Got a 98 Grand Am with 80000 miles. about a year ago it started making a what I can only describe as a grinding noise. Sounds kind of like a bearing that has to grease in it. When this started all I had to do was turn my ventilation knob to AC and the noise would stop. Then over time it got worse then it got to were turn on the AC didn't stop the noise. I opened to hood and sprayed a bunch of WD-40 on the compressor pully thinking it was what was causing the noise. Sure enough the noise stopped while spraying the wd-40 on it. It was quite for about a month then the process started again. Now the wd-40 isn't working. Been putting this off because I'm jobless right now and havn't been able to find work. However, I fear that if I don't solve the problem the pulley could eventually freeze up or snap off cause alot more problems.

My questions are. 1. Am I correct in asuming replacment of the compressor will fix the issue. 2. Could just replacing the clutch fix it. 3. How hard is it to replace the compressor and/or clutch. and 4. does replacing this part release the refrigerant making it necessary to recharge the system?

Thank You

P.S. Better to buy used compressor, remanufactored. (New is just to expensive, $300, ouch)

You are correct about replacement it will fix it and be cheaper in the long run. The bearing thats bad is pressed on, witch will be a bear to get off, if you can get it off. Every one i have ever known that had this problem just put another compressor on and recharged the system, its the best and cheapest fix. As far as compressor its up to you, but i would go with remanufactured at least you get a warrenty, if you buy used thats what you get is used or maybe someone elses problem. You will have to recharge the system, but you can do that yourself with a recharge kit from Wal-Mart around $20.00. Besides if it still has the old R12 refrigerant you can upgrade it to the new 134. One thing you should do is have the old refrigerant sucked out someplace that can capture it because of environmental issues.

I am just trying to finde out how much it is to replace the ac pulley on my 99 Pontiac grand am the air woks great but pulley is grinding bad do I replace the ac pum to or just pulley and how much for...

The grinding noise is likely to be the pulley bearing. You are best off to replace the whole compressor and have the system recharged. For that year you can get one from AutoParts for about $200. Other parts like gas and a receiver/drier would be about $100-200 and labour about $300

98 grand am grinding/ A/C Compressor???

hi yes it sounds like the clutch or the bearing the job is not bad to do if you just do the clutch you will not loose any freeon if you replace the compressor you will need to have it recharged. as for used there is usuraly no gurantee that it will work.your best bet is to go with a rebuilt or new. you will have to replace the compressor oil and freeon.
