I am driving to pick up my kids and as I am shifting into third gear it shuts off and will not start up again until later that day. The next day everything was fine until I got half wy to my daughter school and again when I shift into third gear my car went completely dead for about 10min and it started back up. So can you give me some idea what it could be because I have no idea.

If it is a manule trans then you need to shift it sooner. And for the reason it will not go into third gear is the gear could be gone or the saycronizer is bad. You will have to put in a new trans or get this one fixed in order to get third gear.
I would start with a transmission fliud and filter service.
I would then have the trasnmission checked out by a transmission shop. The transmission most of the time has the direct drum band is starting to go. The shops can rebuild it no problem, This is a very common failure wiith the trasnmission.
A reason for hard shifting could be a problem with many things with various degrees of seriousness. It could be your ATF( automatic transmission fluid) is low or broken down and old. This would cause the hardness and the reason for stop and go traffic effecting it. Another possibility is your transmission is just shot, and the timing gears inside are worn and not properly shifting at the correct RPM causing a **** during shifting.
