Question about 1998 Dodge Durango

Keyless entry, Interior lights, AC Fan Controls problem

I have a 1998 Durango with some problems in the electrical system somewhere. The Remote Key, The AC contols, Interior Lights, Cigarette lighter do not work. The AC Controls work on max blow setting only. This problem goes away for a few minutes and then comes back. It's somehow connected to the drivers door, when I open it, the ac contols stop completely. I have found a white plastic box mounted to the left of the brake pedal (behind the diagnostic plug) that has a lot of wires attached to it and is held in place by a large bolt. I loosened to bolt to open the box and the electronic chime came on, the ac contol started working, loosened it some more to open the box and look for bad wires and everything dyed. The car wouldn't start and everything was dead. That scared the hell out of me and I tighened the bolt (srew) back to where it was and everything went back to "normal". The truck runs fine, and I'm worried about opening that box again.
What is that box, can I open it and fix the short that's in there?

Yes you Can. Just unhook the Battery Cables Before you Tear into the Box. The reason that everything went Nuts with it is whenever you Un Bolted the Box you took the Ground away from the Box and all the Components Connected to it. That Bolt is a Common Ground for the Dash ans other Components. Please Rate My Response! Thanks!

Where is the theft sysem located at on a 2005 Dodge Durango and how can I get to it

What's the problem your having NICK ? The theft system is incorporated in everything , engine computer , body control module ! There is a anti-theft control module , a transponder chip in the head of you ignition key !
The Sentry Key Immobilizer System (SKIS) is available as a factory-installed option on this vehicle. Vehicles equipped with this option can be readily identified by the illumination of the security indicator in the instrument cluster for about three seconds after the ignition switch is turned to the ON position as a SKIS bulb test.
The SKIS includes the following major components, which are described in further detail elsewhere in this service information:
  • Powertrain Control Module (1)- The Powertrain Control Module (PCM) is located in the engine compartment and provides the SKIS engine control logic. ( Refer to 8 - ELECTRICAL/ELECTRONIC CONTROL MODULES/POWERTRAIN CONTROL MODULE - DESCRIPTION ).
  • Security Indicator- A security indicator is integral to the ElectroMechanical Instrument Cluster (EMIC) (also known as the Cab Compartment Node/CCN). ( Refer to 8 - ELECTRICAL/INSTRUMENT CLUSTER/SECURITY INDICATOR - DESCRIPTION ).
  • Sentry Key Remote Entry Module (2)- The Sentry Key REmote Entry Module (SKREEM) (also known as the Sentry Key Immobilizer Module/SKIM or the Wireless Control Module/WCM) is located on the right side of the steering column near the ignition lock cylinder housing and an integral molded plastic antenna ring circles the ignition lock cylinder like a halo. The SKREEM and its antenna are concealed beneath the steering column shrouds. Two SKREEM modules are available: one for vehicles equipped with Remote Keyless Entry (RKE) only, and one for vehicles equipped with RKE and SKIS.
  • Sentry Key Transponder (3)- The Sentry Key transponder is contained within the Remote Keyless Entry (RKE) transmitter on the ignition key.
  • If you do not know about this , do not mess with it , take it to professional. Save your self money an aggravation !

How to install keyless entry?

I disagree. If you have a key that starts the car then the immobilisor is good. A new remote can be easily programmed, and a new key can too.

I have no power going to any of my interior lights or heater controls when the key is off and the remote entry does not work when the key is not on. I have a 2001 Chrysler town and country what could be...

If im not mistaking, you said you have no power to your interior lights and heater controls when you have your key off or not on? in order for you to have power to your heater controls your key must be on or accessory. your light not working? you may have turned your switch off to your interior lights by accident. on your entry door, it could probbably be dead batteries in your remote if it came with one.

Keyless entry key will not unlock door, manual lock will not work, head lamps do not work, interior lights do not come on

These issues have all the symptoms of a failing CTM or Central Timing Module. The unit is located behind the kick panel down by the drivers feet.

The part installed is ~$450-500 bucks at your local dealer. They will need all your remote fobs as they must be relearned into the new CTM.

I have a 2003 dodge durango v8 and the motor will not start. When I turn the key the engine makes no sound at all. The lights in the interior work, as well as the keyless entry. Is this a battery problem...

The problem is most likely the starter, but you should ensure that the battery is fully charged before proceeding. The battery doesn't need to be fully charged to run just about all the interior lights and the head lights, but attempting to crank the engine is a large current draw, and can drop voltage quickly on a partially discharged battery.

If the battery is fully charged, continue to checking the starter.

Key Pad Entry does not work

does the key pad light when you press a button at night? If yes, the fuse is ok.
Do you have the plastic card with the permanent code in your owner manual packet? If yes, tryit.
report back.

Keyless Entry The keyless entry keypad is hardwired to the GEM. The GEM interprets the inputs from the keyless entry keypad and then controls the associated operation. The keyless entry keypad will be illuminated for five seconds when any button is pressed. Additionally, it will request the illuminated entry feature to turn the courtesy lamps on. If a lock all doors code is entered, the illumination will turn off, as well as request the illuminated entry feature to turn off the courtesy lamps. When pressed, the keyless entry keypad supplies the ground signal to the GEM or the GEM receives a signal from the keyless entry remote transmitter. Then the GEM outputs a ground signal to the appropriate lock or unlock relay which supplies the power to the actuator to lock or unlocks all doors, including the luggage compartment. The keyless entry remote transmitter also unlocks the liftgate or activates the panic alarm by sending a signal to the GEM.

Fuse or what

Your multifunction switch on the steering column controls your exterior lights. The GEM module controls the interior lights and other stuff. If bad, it would not blow fuses. WHich fuse blows?
Your Ford dealer might be familiar with this issue, so call the service dept and ask them and get a quote. It may be wiring.

  • The high beams are inoperative
  • Circuitry.
  • Multifunction switch.
  • Go To Pinpoint Test C .

--------------------------------------------------------------
Principles of Operation
Generic Electronic Module (GEM) The generic electronic module (GEM) receives inputs from the following:
  • door ajar switches
  • liftgate ajar switch (wagon)
  • liftgate glass switch (wagon)
  • headlamp switch
  • keyless entry keypad switches
  • the powertrain control module (PCM) (vehicle speed signal)
  • ignition switch
  • remote keyless entry transmitter
The GEM uses these inputs to control the output to the battery saver relay and interior lamp relay. Both relays are integral to the central junction box (CJB) and cannot be accessed directly.
Interior Lighting Systems The GEM grounds the battery saver relay and interior lamp relay coils when any door ajar switch or the headlamp switch is closed. The interior lamp relay then supplies power to the interior lamp circuit. Vehicle speed must be less than 15 kph (9 mph) for the GEM to ground the interior lamp relay. The interior lamps will remain illuminated for a period of up to 25 seconds after all doors are closed or until the ignition is switched from the OFF position, or the GEM receives a vehicle speed signal. Actuating the interior lights from the headlamp switch will operate at any time.
Illuminated Entry Illuminated entry is activated when a keyless entry keypad switch provides ground on the GEM input or when the GEM receives an unlock signal from the remote keyless entry key fob. The GEM then provides ground to the battery saver and interior lamp relay coils. Illuminated entry is deactivated when the GEM receives a lock signal from the remote keyless entry key fob or if the GEM receives ground inputs from the keyless entry keypad switch lock code. Illuminated entry will also be deactivated when the GEM receives input voltage from the ignition switch.
Battery Saver The battery saver is activated when the GEM is not receiving voltage input from the ignition switch (off position). The GEM will then provide ground to the battery saver relay coil for a maximum of 30 minutes depending on the state of the interior lamp switch inputs to the GEM. The energized battery saver relay switches voltage to the demand lamp circuit and the interior lamp relay coil. After time-out, the GEM removes ground to the battery saver relay disabling the demand lamp circuit.
Puddle Lamps The puddle lamp relay operates reverse from the battery saver relay and the interior lamp relay. The puddle lamp relay coil receives voltage when the ignition switch is in the START or RUN position, which disables the circuit to the puddle lamps.
Inspection and Verification
  1. Verify the customer concern by operating the system.
  1. Visually inspect for obvious signs of mechanical and electrical damage.
