Daimler Jaguar Mk II V8 1965 - Advice wanted

Hi im looking at buying a Daimler Jaguar Mk II V8 1965 but I know practically nothing about cars. You can view this car here and the auction closes Sunday! Any advice would be much appreciated! It seems like a good price and I know it will need money spending on it but I dont mind if its not in showroom condition so long as it runs ok and I can use it reliably several times a week.

Thanks for that advice Duvelhedz, much appreciated. There was quite a lot of smoke I think when he started it but then its got no exhaust so i assumed that was why. If it is burning oil is that a big problem?... there is a bit of rust on the car but I assume thats not too hard to fix?...Im not looking for a fast car, just a nice one to drive occasionally. Not every day but then if it runs well, why not?!

The SP250 would not be your getaway car!! Optimum cruising speed is about 55mph. Beware of rust on this model. My fathers one had a small spot at the bottom of the drivers door, in 6 months in a irish winter had it spread very quickly, They rust as quick as the BJ40 70's toyota land cruisers. If as you say you need something that will run reliably, i would go for something that you can inspect the service history. If you have no proof other than the word of the seller that all this work was done on the car in the past 15 -20 years, ask for it, Ask for garage receipts, parts lists etc. If the seller cant produce them, Then generally avoid! If he can produce this stuff, ask him why he is selling it, you might get yourself a good buy there.

When you go to see the car make sure the engine is cold first

When you go to start it turn the ignition on, wait for all the gauges and ticking to stop before hitting the start button on the dashboard

Check floor and boot for rust

Check behind the front bumper for rust too, If the door cards are loose have a look behind them for rust inside the doors.

Let the engine warm up. Rev it hard and check for smoke. If it is blue, its burning oil. If it's black a tune up is needed

Good Luck

The rear part of the exhaust is the muffler to stop a vehicle sounding like a tractor! You should see a bit a smoke when it starts, That is normal. If it is burning blue smoke it means oil is leaking into the cylinders, I could mean the rings are worn, the valve guides are little worn perhaps, Listen in the engine bay for irregular rattles.

I have a 78 landcruiser with the valve guides worn, There is no smoke until I deacellerate. It is caused by a vacuum in the engine while slowing down which draws oil down into the exaust via the valves. It doesnt affect engine performance as the leak is outside the cylinder during the compression stage of the 4 stroke cycle so i therefore not too serious.

However i would be worried about continual blue smoking

This went on from 1988 to 1994 and with every year you will find different things they changed that were problems with the preceding year . like the 88 & 89 had digital dash boards that failed a lot to hard wiring breaking so on 90 they changed that as well as a engine upgrade

You are commiting a cardinal sin here and playing around with something you know absolutly zilch about and have been listerning to the bar room know it all who the more they pour down their throat the more they know .take it off and throw it away as you throwing out all the cars balanced electronic engine management ny removing the air filter which is designed to perform a function and the rest of the sensors and stuff of which you know nothing about is being thrown out ,if you want a faster car buy a jaguar or a old ford cortina with the V6 engine in.You cannot mess around with a modern day car like i used too with things like humber hawks and sunbeam rapiers.

Special tools are required, you CANNOT do this at home. Take it to a shop that does Jaguar work. If you dont know what you are doing, serious engine damage will result.

I have a 1988 3.6 auto daimler vanden plas. on my waring screen i'm getting 3 warnings 1 fuel failure 2 curcuit 2 failure. ant ideas please steve

I to have a 1988 Daimler 3.6 vanden plas. I would greatley appreciate if some one could let me know about any information on this model, ie; what made the vdp different from the standard daimler 3.6, production numbers and origional cost. In regards to your question, my daimler also said it had fuel failure. I put some injector cleaner in with the petrol and the warning hasnt come up since. As for the circuit 2 failure, it could be numerous things, but start with checking the fuses in the left side fuse box. It could also mean that a light bulb or other elecrical item has a broken circuit somewhere.
