Idles ruff and chokes off

2001 Mercury Cougar .When I cranked it this morning it felt like it was goimg to choke off.I drove it about a mile and the check engine light started flashing on and off so I brought it home disconnected battery cabled and reset computer. The light went away but the car is still running very ruff and if you place your hand over the exhaust pipe you van fill it misfireing. It also cut off by itself one time. But it always cranks right back up no problem.

My 2001 Cougar does the same thing. I replaced all 6 spark plugs and air filter and still doing the same thing. Mine however also will do it if I accellerate to fast as if it doesn't know it needs to change gears or something. A slight release of the gas and then repressing it gets past it but it's still inconvienent.

SOURCE: Car runs very ruff at idle.Check engine light was flshing

You need to have it check immediately if the CEL was Flashing. This means that your engine is experiencing a serious missfire and damage to the catalytic convertors can occur if you continue to drive it. If it was on steady then it means PCM has detected a concern and you should have it check but will not cause damage.

High idle aprox 2500 rpm. I need to diganose this, where do I start.

Check the idle air control valve. It is mounted on the side of the throttle body. It acts like a choke on fuel injected engines. Here is a link with some pictures and prices for the 3.8 and 5.0 litre engines....i hope this helps.

I just rebuilt my F-150 1 barrel Carter carb (1985)once started runs great under all power ranges.Problem? Hard to start.

should adjust the butterfly to about 3/8" opening at 50 degrees farenheit when engine is cold. Usually about 1 mark to the lean side on the choke spring housing. If unsure set the choke to the center mark than richen up one mark at a time until the engine starts and idles up when cold after properly setting choke by fully depressing and releasing the accelerator before cranking. If it doesn't idle up enough turn up the fast idle screw 1/2 turn at a time. Another common problem with the YFA is the choke heat riser tube rusting off at the manifold and the choke not unloading when the engine warms. Install a new riser tube after using a drill bit the same diameter as the tube to drill out the remainder of the old tube in manifold before inserting the new tube and attaching to choke housing.

This morning it was very difficult to start my 03 Passat

VAG suffer greatly with a signal failure to ECU that brings the choke on when cold. Your fault is text book of this.

Follow the top radiator hose to where it meet the engine, at that point you will see a sensor, it has 4 wires and is held in by a horseshoe clip. This is the water coolant sensor, replace it and you'll be happy again :o)

Only runs ruff during park and idle.

Your EGR valve shouldn't open up during idle or the engine will run rough and may even stall. Remove it and clean the plunger and port with a wire brush and some carb cleaner. Test the diaphragm with a vacuum pump. If it doesn't work after cleaning, or the diaphragm is bad, buy a new EGR valve.
