RedLine 75W140 Sythetic try this stuff if you cannot find it an any store then check here. http://www.shopmpt.com/redline/gear.html.
Those are manual transmission here is for auto matic.
Jaguar X-Type --Calls for the following fluid compatible specs... EssoLT 71141(BMW); Shell ATF 3403 M115; Shell M1375.4; MERCON V XT-5-QMATF; IDEMITSU K17; Jatco 3100 PL085

Or if you want the best bang for the buck:

My 2002 jaguar s-type will start but it will not go anywhere when I press the gas pedal. My husband put fuses in each fuse box and then a light came on that said FAIL SAFE MODE. What can I do?

the message "fail safe mode" is telling you that there is a fault in either the engine or gear box. In your case the problem is in the transmission. Run the fault codes and check for a torque converter servo/solenoid failure or a TCM problem. Check that there is oil in the transmission.

hello,
Get a jump start, with a good set of leads.

Connecting + to + Positive to Positive..

Negative to Negative --- to ----, and have your battery tested.

after being done that,if the problem still persist i will advice you check the transmission or you change the gear box.this is the most common problem on jaguars.
wish you good luck,

My jaguar x type 2.0 auto is leaking transmission fluid and there was smoke coming from the vehicle as i drove it. Its a 2002 model what could be the problem?

front pump seal is leaking or oil pan seal is leaking and hitting the exhaust pipe. time for a transmisson oil change and fliter replacement. costs about $200.00 at any tranny shop.

Transmission problem

unusual to have the higher "gears"go usually its the lower gear that fails, is this a vehicle that does a lot of long distance work. has the oil been changed regularly? this may be a contributing factor if it has,nt, still needs a new box at the end of the day though

I also started getting a warning light today 'powertrain malfunction' on my 2002 Jaguar x-type

You might have to change the shift cable. I had the problem last year (2007), worked perfectly after that......:)
