This was happening to my 96 Escort too. Drove fine to work one , then got in to go home later and and it threw a rod and made a horrible knocking noise. This happened a couple months after the sputtering started. I hear the rod is a common problem with this year/model from what I've read online. I haven't had the money to fix it yet, so not sure if there were additional problems, though I read one blog from another Escort owner who described exactly what happened to mine.

How do i stop my 1994 ford explorer from sputtering and shutting down when driving at low speed

Not getting enough fuel. There are two coolant temperature sensors one for the gauge. one for the computer. the one to the computer monitors fuel. When it fails the engine is slow to start the first try and there is a strong odor of gasoline. The engine will run rough at some speeds and sometimes stall.

The engine sputters as if flooded when it is hot and when the weather is hot. If it is cold it will run and start perfectly.

Check your Distributor Cap for cracks, also check the pcm for DTC's.. I have seen 02 Sensors cause symptoms like this also..

I will need more information to help you further diagnose this problem

Have 96 explorer that will sputter and not always start for about a half an hour if it sits for a short time

This is a classic fuel pump issue. When it doesn't start spray some brake cleaner into the throttle body. If it starts then the fuel pump is weak.
