Yes hook it back up and try to move the steering wheel also along with the gear shift then try the key they are all hooked to gether on that lock device for your key. Jerry

someone is going to have to check out your linkage on that shifter to see if it is out of adjustment .sounds like that is the problem because it is also hooked to the key start. along with the locking steering wheel .. sometimes you can move the steering wheel and the shifter at the same time and get the key to turn off. The ignition switch is a problem for gm cars of that year , do you have alot of keys or baubles on you keychain , that can accelerate the wear on the ignition switch.

The ignition key was shut off and left in the acc. position. The battery discharged and is now dead. The car is stuck in the garage. How do I override the park lock to put the shifter in neutral so I can...

Only way I know of to release the shifter is to attach a jumper battery (or jump pack) on it to energize the system. See if the shop you normally deal with has one you can borrow? If it wasn't left on very long (hours, not weeks) unless the battery was marginal to begin with, chances are it's not totally bad and can be re-charged. Your only other option would be to disconnect the shift cable from the transmission and move the shift lever on the transmission manually.....more work than it's worth in most cases.

Gear stuck in park what can i do now

there is a slot next to the gear shifter that you can put a key into and push down that will release the lock on the the shifter...
if its a truck and your putting the key in the ignition and turning it on, or at the very least to the acc position and it wint shift, apply the brake and then try, if it still wont move your most likley going to have an ignition lock malfunction... the cylinder that your key slides into and turn, to turn the car on has an unlocking piece that allows it to unlock only then the key is in..... try those and let me know....
hope this helps

I have a 96 Jetta that is stuck in 1st gear. The linkage cable is working but the car wont go outta 1st!

The transmission is shifted with a computer. The computer needs input signals in order to make a shift decision, There are three speed sensors (input, output, and vehicle speed) that must work for a shift to be comanded. I wouldrecomend you sheck for stored codes and check the vehicle speed sensor. Is the speedo working?

The shifter in my Jeep Liberty get stuck and will

this is caused by the steering wheel not locking, try moving the steering wheel one way and locking it, then it will start and you can shift it outta park.

Key doesnt turn

dose your car have a key removal lock ? a lock you have to press befor you can remove the key ?
there is a shift over ride by your shifter. between/around the shifter and the radio (closer to the sifter) there is a small round plastic cover you can remove with a small flat head screw driver. remove this. you will a key or the screw driver and insert it into, what looks like a key hole for your car and turn/press (sorry for being vauge GMC's change year to year) this should allow you to move the shifter into park. make sure the car is off or at lest you have the E-brake on as well as your peddle brakes.
