Okay, you are correct, the key is stuck because of the shifter lock wont release, the most common reason is its stuck, you will need to remove the covering around shift to get to shifter lock release solenoid, there you will clean and lube it, you will need to move it by hand as you spray wd40 on the arms, you will see how it work by pressing the shift release and you will see to lever that gets pushed, it wont move because its stuck but you will see the levers move inside, hope this helps, good day.
Ignition - Key Stuck In Ignition Switch/Won't Turn
Bulletin No.: 06-02-35-005
Date: February 28, 2006
Key Stuck in Ignition, Key Will Not Return to Off Position, Shifter Button Won't Release in Park Position (Adjust Shifter Detent Finger)
2002-2005 Chevrolet Monte Carlo
Customers may comment on any of the following conditions:
- The key is stuck in the ignition cylinder.
- They cannot return the key to the off position to remove the key.
- The shifter button won't release in the park position.
This condition may be caused by the detent finger shifting over time. This may result in mis-alignment and binding of the shift rod on the shift position guide.
WHERE YOUR SHIFTER IS YOU WILL HAVE TO TAKE IT APART ..MAYBE THE RUBBER BOOT IS IT THE WAY,OR THE SHIFT LOCK SELINOID WHENT BAD
Only way I know of to release the shifter is to attach a jumper battery (or jump pack) on it to energize the system. See if the shop you normally deal with has one you can borrow? If it wasn't left on very long (hours, not weeks) unless the battery was marginal to begin with, chances are it's not totally bad and can be re-charged. Your only other option would be to disconnect the shift cable from the transmission and move the shift lever on the transmission manually.....more work than it's worth in most cases.
there is a slot next to the gear shifter that you can put a key into and push down that will release the lock on the the shifter...
if its a truck and your putting the key in the ignition and turning it on, or at the very least to the acc position and it wint shift, apply the brake and then try, if it still wont move your most likley going to have an ignition lock malfunction... the cylinder that your key slides into and turn, to turn the car on has an unlocking piece that allows it to unlock only then the key is in..... try those and let me know....
hope this helps
The transmission is shifted with a computer. The computer needs input signals in order to make a shift decision, There are three speed sensors (input, output, and vehicle speed) that must work for a shift to be comanded. I wouldrecomend you sheck for stored codes and check the vehicle speed sensor. Is the speedo working?
