Question about 1998 Oldsmobile Intrigue

1 Answer

Rough Idle on cold start.

I own a 1998 Oldsmobile Intrigue equipped with the 3800 series II with about 120k - lately in the mornings when it is really cold 25-35 degrees the idle is erratic and looks and feels as if it is missing, driving is fine - then when stopped it seems to want to stall, coolant is good - oil is good. I am mechanically inclined and know my way around engines really well until all this computer stuff gets involved - please help before I figure out a way to shove an old carburated version in - LOL

Runs great once warmed up - plugs and wires all new, coil packs are still original, this weekend I cleaned the MAF and IAT sensors and it seemed to run alot better - but it was also like 50 degrees out, I took it up the highway and ran it out of numbers, I am still open for suggestions though, could a crankshaft sensor cause it to do that - I also sprayed around the intake with carb cleaner to try to find any vacuum or intake leaks, it seemed fine.

I will take a closer look at the throttle body and to be sure I will replace the the gasket if it has one - if not I will seal it with some copper RTV and see where that gets me - thanks!

2002 Mazda Tribute, starts up fine but drops to a very low idle, shakes real bad and sometimes stalls. Run fine once at normal running temp.

Does the engine run OK after reaching operating temperature? Are the spark plugs, filters, etc. in good order?

You may have a vaccum leak at the throttle body , the plastic intakes tend to warp at the throttle body end

98 Olds Intrigue (GM 3800) All of a sudden the service engine soon like is flashing and the engine runs very rough when in gear. Especially noticeable when idling in gear... any ideas where to look?

First you need to do is get the trouble code out of the computer this will get you in the right area of the problem then you can trouble shoot it.Sounds like it could be a EGR valve stuck in the open position.

Need to drain coolant from 1998 Olds Intrigue. What is best way? (3800 Engine)

COOLANT CHANGEON THE RADIATOR (LOWER DRIVERS SIDE FACING THE MOTOR) THERE IS A PLASTIC LIKE PLUG THAT YOU TURN COUNTER CLOCKWISE ABOUT 3/4 OF A TURN, THEN YOU CAN PULL IT OUT ABOUT 1/2 AN INCH THIS WILL DRAIN THE RADIATOR, THEN YOU CAN PUSH THE PLUG BACK IN AND TURN IT UNTIL YOU FEEL IT LOCK BACK IN PLACE. REFILL RADIATOR WITH 3 PARTS COOLANT TO 1 PART WATER.
1998-'99 Intrigues equipped with the 3800 engine have a specific process for replacing antifreeze. It is somewhat of a lengthy process and you should refer to your owners manual for doing this. After you empty and flush your system with water (garden hose), only fill the system with green 50/50 antifreeze, NOT Dex-Cool. Avoid Dex-Cool. If you bring your Intrigue to a shop to get serviced, make sure and inform whoever doing repairs and/or leave a note (clearly visible) to NOT use Dex-Cool if they're doing any work pertaining to cooling system.

Starts fine when cold, after running dies on idle then wont start

Sounds like the fuel filter is dirty and needing to be changed. It's cheap and easy to swap out.

Check and or replace your speed sensor if that does not work replace the instrument cluster - you can find one at almost any salvage yard.
