Question about 2003 Subaru Outback

Subaru Outback - '03 boxer 2.5L engine sounds like a diesel

2003 Subaru Outback wagon w/ 2.5L 4 cylinder boxer engine sounds like a diesel all the time. Some sort of valve slap/tapping. Two dealers have told me that the boxer engines just makes that noise, but I have had an '02 Legacy wagon w/ a 1.5L four boxer and have an '07 Legacy sedan with a 2.5L four boxer engine, neither one of which makes/made that noise. Is there a cure for the noise?

Thanks

It's -4 degrees at the moment, up from -16, so heavier oil won't be a solution. This happens year-round, summer and winter. I've run 10w-30 and 5w-40 in the engine with no difference. Dealers claim valves are properly adjusted, but I think something else must be off.

05 Outback Wagon 2.5L load rapping noise 9sounds like a deisel) poor/cheap gasoline is NOT the problem. Does NOT stop when engine is warmed up. Sound is louder when car is idling.

Heavier oil if you are not in a cold climate. but before you do that have the oil pressure checked. We used to use a can of STP every once in a while on a motor in a dodge we had... nothing wrong with it... was just noisy.

Why does my subaru sounds like a diesel wen I starts it

I assume your Subaru is older, or has quite a few miles on it. Subaru Boxer Engines tend to develop noise we refer to as "Piston Slap". As the engine develops wear in the cylinders, the cylinders become out-of round. Because the cylinder is no longer within very tight tolerances, the piston, when it reaches top dead center, will "Slap" the opposing cylinder wall as it makes it way back down the bore. This is common among high mileage or older Subaru engines, and it usually will go away very quickly as the engine warms up. If that is the case, you don't have anything to worry about. I have seen Subaru Boxer Motors with significant slap with 300000 miles on them that run just fine once they warm up. If the noise does not go away when warm, you may have a more serious problem.

What is the location of the FUEL AIR RATIO SENSOR on a Subaru Outback, 2001,. 2.2 L ?

since that is a Boxer engine it will have one O2 sensor at the base of each exhaust manifold. and since it is newer than a 1996 it will have one or two more O2 sensors behind each catalytic converter so you will have three or four ( O2 sensors) fuel air ratio sensors you need to check if you are having a problem. the two at each exhaust manifold are the upstream and the ones at the catalytic converters are the downstream. hopefully that engine only has one catalytic converter going into one exhaust pipe. the exaust manifolds are under the engines cylinder heads (under the engine).
