Well there could be two problems here, it could be starter or it could be starter switch. Now when you turn the key to start does it click or do you have to turn it off and on 2 or 3 or or more times before it will engage and start? I know you said there is no crank, i just want to know if it clicks. Because if it clicks than most likely its starter, but if don't click its most likely the starter switch. Now before you go buying parts you may not need, make sure you chk. the ovious first, like all connections make sure battery cables are clean and tight, and that goes for the starter too. starting problems always show up in cold weather, and most of the time its because of poor matinence, i'am not saying thats your case but believe me it happens alot. Now if every thing chks. out ok and starter does not click then its most likely starter switch, most starter switches are located under dash on steering colume.

I'm assuming we're talking about a petrol van? From your description it's either the battery or the starter motor.

If jump starting from another vehicle using leads doesn't help then you can probably eliminate the battery. However, if it is the battery, probably it is not charging enough - possibly because your journeys are too short and in winter you're using lights, wipers, and heater fans more than usual. If it's an old battery replace it, if it's fairly new try using a trickle charger over night.

If the battery is fine, or replacing it hasn't helped, and the starter is not turning check all the connections to the starter are attached and in good condition. If bumping the van helps it start (ie push starting it) then possibly you have worn starter motor brushes and these need replacing. If you've replaced the battery and the starter motor now turns but the van still doesn't fire you need to consider the plugs, points (if it has points), rotor arm, ht leads and distributor cap (probably in that order). Often just wiping the plug caps dry and spraying damp start on the leads will get a vehicle going, but to avoid doing this all the time replace the parts as necessary, and make sure they are clean and gapped correctly.

Go to your computer search for fusebox diagrams and find out where the starter relay is, most likely its a square black box inside the under hood black square fuse block.

1998 chevy asto van wont crank or turn over

Turn the headlights on and watch them while the key is turned to start. If the lights go out, one of your cables or connections at battery or starter is not good. If lights dim a lot but stay on, possibly a bad starter, it needs testing. If lights aren't affected by cranking position, turn lights off, pull the small wire off the starter solenoid, hook up a test light to ground and to the solenoid wire. Light should come on when key is held in crank. If it does, likely a bad starter solenoid. If no light, then the start circuit from ignition switch to starter solenoid is not working. Check for power out of ignition switch on the start wire with key in crank, to begin with. If powered, switch is good, need to check if neutral safety switch is good, and then check or swap in a new starter relay.
Post back with any results.
Good luck.

Thanks for choosing FixYa and welcome. Since you have power inside the car, the battery and power connection should be good. You still want to make sure you have the best possible connection because if the starter isn't getting the correct amount of volts, it won't turn. So clean your battery terminals and post to make sure. Check your ignition fuse too. It should be labeled and shouls be located in the engine compartment fuse box. You may have a bad starter if the two steps before check out. You can take a hammer or pole, just something to make contact with your starter. You want to tap it five to seven times. Then try to start the van. If it starts, you have a bad starter and need to get it changed. I am thinking it is the starter because you have been having starting problems. Hit it and see if your van will crank up. Let me know what happens.

This is usually an indication that your battery is failing. When the battery no longer holds enough cranking amps it won't turn the starter effectively.
Batteries in vehicles often need replacing after a couple of seasons as weather is their #1 enemy (hot summers and/or freezing winters).
Other signs would be lights not at their full brightness, the battery gauge at about 30% or less when the car's engine isn't running, and a buildup on the terminal posts of the battery.

Re: 2003 audi a6 not cranking when cold

try running lighter weight oil in the winter time, if the oil is too cold the starter will have to work extra hard to turn the engine over and sometimes this will cause fuel problems because the injectors are timed with the engine.

2000 ford windstar won't crank over, but pats keys good, and batt.

First thing I would check is to see if you have power at the trigger wire of the starter motor while someone is trying to start the vehicle for you. It will be a Yellow with a light blue trace. If you do then I would check to see if the main battery cable has power to it all the time when someone is trying to crank it. If it does then I would hold a test light on the case of the starter motor and have someone try to crank it. Make sure that the ground you use for this test is on the negative battery terminal not just anywhere on the car. If the test light lights while you are cranking it then you have a bad ground. Hook up a set of jumper cables from the battery negative terminal and clamp it directly on to your starter motor and see if it starts. If you check it and the test light doesn't light up and all the other checks are good then your starter motor has failed. If one of the other tests has failed then you have a starter relay problem or something else. let me know what you find out.
