1998 Jeep Cherokee - hard to start

I have a '98 Cherokee, 4.0 liter with only 91k miles. I have to crank it over several times then stop, crank it several more times and stop, and then it starts immediately on the thrid try. Have changed plugs, wires, cap, rotor, battery, and gas cap. Also has a little bit of a rough idle, but runs great. Any ideas?

My 98 Cherokee was the exact same. I used to have to turn the key back and forth 3 times and then it would start. Otherwise it would just crank and crank for a while and then start. Pretty embarrassing! Took it to the dealer and they said that my fuel pump was losing pressure. I changed the fuel pump and I don't have to prime the pump anymore.

Try turning the key to on position and wait several seconds. Then move the key to start position and see if it starts quicker. If it start right up, your probably looking at needing a new fuel pump. Considering the age of the vehicle this is a possibility. The fuel tank must be dropped on most vehicles to get to the fuel pump.

Sounds to me like the crankshaft position sensor is failing.

98 jeep cherokee does not start straight away. No pattern just whenever it feels like it, nothing happens when the key gets turned. but other times it starts with no problem

Sounds like the fuel pump. Sometimes it'll start right up, others it'll crank for 30 seconds. Probably losing pressure. It's located in the fuel tank.

1998 Jeep Cherokee 2.5td Ltd: intermittent cranking problem.

It sounds like you need to get the starter motor either repaired or replaced. Due to constant trying to start the car, it maybe that the battery is discharged a bit, causing the engine not to respond as usual, so you have to give more throttle. First , get the starter sorted and charge the battery, then you will see how it goes . Hope this helps

Trouble startng 98 jeep

Sounds like a fuel problem. Could also be plugs fouled out. Try running some injector cleaner though it, or even hooking up a trouble shooting tester on it. I invested in one for my vehicle. They don't cost too much. It really sounds like fuel is not getting through the injectors.

Engine stops immediatly after starting

Sounds like faulty Crank position sensor. These tend to go out alot on Jeeps. Most of the time it will be running fine and then it will shut off like someone shut the key off. Hope this helps.
