Question about 1994 GMC Sonoma

1 Answer

94 Sonoma 4x4 won;t lock into 4WD.

My Sonoma was working fine a week ago. I needed to engage the 4Hi this week and it would not lock in. When I press the 4Hi button on the dash nothing happens in park or drive. If I select neutral it will try to shift ( 4Hi light flashes as normal ) but then goes back to 2Hi. If when in neutral I press the 4Low button it shifts fine and locks into 4Low. The Transfer case motor was replaced by a Dealer about 3 years ago so I don't think that is the problem. This problem happened all of a sudden. Any ideas on this. Thanks in advance

Yea its not shifting again like before ? sounds like your transfer case solonoid has possably gone bad again .. these are a sometimes dont work item .. It is what shifts the transfer case into gear and it might be a little worn or weathered and not letting the switch kick it in gear all the way from the N position. thanks Jerry holler if you need more.

4 high won't engage but 4 lo and 2wd work fine

Check for power to the front differential actuator. This actuator slides a gear in position to lock the differential to drive the front wheels. If you have power and ground to the actuator when in the 4HI position, the actuator has gone bad.The 4LO is only engaging at the transfer case, but the front wheels are still not engaged if it is not working in 4HI.

My 1997 GMC Sierra lights for 4hi and 4lo blink when i push the 4hi button and then goes back into 2hi. but when i push 4lo it locks in and works fine. I tried changing the 4wd motor on the transfer c

THE TRANSFER CASE MOTOR IS ONLY FOR 4WD LOW. That would have never been the problem as soon as you confirmed it shifted into 4wd Low. 2wd and 4 Hi work off of vacuum. You may have one or two issues. A vacuum leak up by the front axle that engages the 4wd HI or the sensors on the transfer case.

I can't get my 94 sonoma to shift into 4wd..when I turn the truck on , the lights all light up briefly, yet when I press 4hi or 4lo nothing happens...I've checked the fuse...

the actuator is known to stick and or seize on the 4x4 jack up and secure vehicle the actuator is on side of transfer case check wiring and connections at actuator if good than u can use a rubber mallet tap around actuator to loosen any road debris which sometimes works but the best is to test and if good to unbolt clean and lube actuator and shaft and replace

I put the truck in neutral, switch to 4x4 high and the front tires on the dashboard will only blink and the 4x4 high or low will not engage.. neither of them working even though I hear that little clicking...

there are 2 switches inside of the transfer case. they are screwed into the bottom of the transfer case. you may have an issue with one of them or both. by the way, you dont need to put the truck in neutral to shift the truck into 4x4 high. you can doit while you are moving. try that also. you do need to stop to put it in 4low. but i would be looking into those switches screwed into the transfer case. we/nissan had some issues with those.

I have a 2001 GMC Sierra Pickup that has electronic 4WD that will not engage. If you press the buttons to enter from 2HI to 4HI, 4LO, Etc. the choice of the button changes (lights up) but the truck does...

fullyjr.

Engaging from 2WD - 4HI/Lo requires movement of the vehicle. very low speed under 5mph, push button should engage. the vehicle has to be moving.

if it is a lever type and not automatic 4WD. You have to manually get down and turn the hubs clockwise to engage or couter clockwise to remove from 4WD. then Push the lever to 4L or 4Hi. If it is automatic. You press a button to engage 4wd.

My 98 chevy blazer won't shift into 4wd.

Most common problem is the vacuum diaphragm that is so inconviently mounted UNDER the battery tray. The cable that locks in the front diff is attached to it and vacuum pulls it in/out.
