Need to replace the shifter cable on a 2003 PT Cruiser

The shifter was really hard to put into gear when it was cold. Yesterday morning, I went to put it into reverse and it kinda made a crunch noise and now it is stuck in park, The shifter moves up and down very easily now, but it wont change gears. How do I change the shifter cable?

Have the EXACT same problem. 2005 Pt Cruiser w about 88,000 miles. Became hard to shift when cold and then bam ....something broke. Moves freely. I know I'm going to get screwed on this... what should it cost to have it fixed. The guy at a shop close by (figured close to make towing easier) started into this 'its a dealer only part and blah blah...at least an hour .... " He's going to send an estimate tomorrow. I'm in E. metro Atlanta

I got mine fixed. Had to change the cable and the whole shifter assembly. It wasnt too bad in price, less then $200 total, and my son-in-law changed it in about 1/2 hr in the driveway. Just go to the dealer and get the parts break down for that area and get the cable and chances are, you will need the assembly too.

Have same problem!!! with 2003 PT Cruiser-- wife's car stuck in garage at work--- has been an occasional problem since purchased new -- took off cowling -- park interlock cable [ drivers side] lacks tension to pull pin so it will clear and engage the shifter cable-- sprayed pin with WD40-- released after some moving of interlock cable-- will avoid Park and leave in Neutral with key in -- and check on new interlock cable!!! Good Luck Chad!!!!

Have some one ( with engine OFF) slowly shift from 1st to Reverse, YOU be out side and watch the linkage and tranny movement. WHAT you may have is loose bracket, tranny, or support bolts. bigAl

Reverse gear?

This could be due to the gear box or clutch. If this is a new car it may just need adjusting. If it is not a new car they maybe worn down and need replacing.

3000gt transmission

Hi,
Look on a 3000GT forum (search on Google) to find out how to read the transmission codes. I bet they are stored in the transmission computer. This will tell you what needs fixed.

Also, does sound like the shifter may be out of adjustment. Maybe a cable is broken or loose.

Transmission will not go into any gear

Stick a magnet on your pedal and if it doesn\'t stick then it\'s the OEM pedal and should be replaced with the steel pedal.

Pontiac had this \'awesome\' idea to make the clutch pedal out of aluminum and after 20 years the pedal actually starts to bend and bottom out on the floorboard before giving you all of the travel necessary to disengage the clutch. Fierostore.com sells a replacement pedal for about 50 bucks. This is the first place I would start since it is what fixed my 1986 Fiero GT 4spd.

If the problem is still manifesting then move onto bleeding/replacing the clutch master/slave cylinders.

I\'ve also seen the brackets on the transmission that the shift and select cables attach to have worn out and introduced a bunch of slop in the shifter, but this is less common.

I\'ve also seen the clutch release bearing seize because of a broken release bearing fork slipping around the collar and grabbing the freely rotating part of the bearing. This then leads to pressure plate fingers breaking off and soon no matter how hard you push, the clutch won\'t disengage. Tranny has to come out. Seen this once.

And last but not least, I\'ve also seen a nut on the inside of the transmission shift/select shaft come loose and leave the tranny stuck in the 3/4 fork. Seen this one time 5 years ago.

Good luck,

5th gear is hard to get and crunches when car is cold,1600 cc spo

Yes we have fixed our problem ,we checked with a neihbours son who is a mechanic and it appears the wrong oil was installed at some stage which was too heavy and too thick when cool, causing drag on the synchros , after the correct lubrication was installed, the problem went away.

2004 silverado, duramax and allison transmission, upon cranking got note on speedometer view that cannot engage in gear. would not go in reverse.....put in drive rolled forward and then went into reverse....

What kinda batteries do you got? Are the cables any good? Sounds to me like a power/ground issuse. Either that or you have to small of batteries to crank over a high compession enigne when it's cold, with the glow plugs, and heater grid pulling all of the power from the batteries.
And check the trans fluid level for your problem with the trans.
And you're gonna need to be a little more specific on the thunping noise.

Car turns off when put in reverse or drive in the mornings, its an automatic,a golf III Volkswagen

This is a common problem with alot of other makes of cars, it has to do with the air fuel mixture when the car is cold these settings are changed under normal operating temperature by the ECM to make the engine run normally when it is not at optimal running temp. The cause of the engine to stall when in put into reverse is the reverse gear in any car is geared higher then forward first gear so the engine has to work harder to move the vehicle and with a cold engine if the engine is not 100% tuned (proper maintenance and tune up) it will stall when cold and specially when put into reverse. This is a very difficult problem to diagnose and only a highly skilled vdub mechanic working on your car can fix this. I could tell you 8 different things you could try but they may not work, its kinda trail and error. Hope this helps
