Question about 1997 Ford Thunderbird LX

2 Answers

Starting problems 97 Thunderbird LX. 4.6L. Turning the ignition to the on position, I have to wait for the fuel pump and the radiator fan to stop running before turning the ignition to the start position to start the engine (about 10 to 20 sec). Also the over drive button light will not come on until the pump and fan turn off. any answers?

I have the same problem you are having and I have already changed the PCM but still having the same problem. I'm trying to search for a diagram of all the circuit breakers and where they are located. I've replaced all the fuses in the main power box under the hood with no success in solving the problem yet.

I have the same exact problem with a 1997 thunderbird 3.8. Haven't found an answer yet. I replaced the relay assembly or what ford calls the ccrm (continous control relay module) but still have the same problem. I am hesitant to replace the pcm.

This is caused by the PCM not powering up. I would replace the PCM power relay in the battery junction box(fuse box under hood).

December 2011. Has anybody resolved this issue yet? That is, 97 Tbird 4.6 will crank all day but won't run until electric fan motor stops. It is not the IAC, MAP, MAF, ECT, etc. Light came on this past summer, runs like ****, Codes read all 3 O2 sensors & the ECT sensor. I have received advise on a bad ground somewhere, fan relays, etc. but none of them help. I am now resolved to pay a shop with a real scan tool (not an OB2 code reader)that can take a instantaneous read(snapshot photo) to see what the computer sees at startup. I had hoped someone would have figured this out by now. If you have a solution please write to me at talktoschmidty@yahoo.com. I will gladly pay for the correct solution as opposed to paying the Ford dealer way too much money.

Cranks but wont start

There is fuel in the tank? When you turn the key in the ON position, you hear the fuel pump running for some seconds and then stops or keep on? Maybe you have a clogged fuel filter, or a bad fuel pressure regulator... please post more details.

I got a 97 ford thunderbird lx when i try and srart it it turns over but wont start?

sounds lie a bad fuel pump. replace your fuel filter first, if that doesnt work then you may need to drop the fuel tank to get the pump out.

Have to wait till electroic engine fan shuts off to start engine it is a 97 thunderbird lx v8

This sounds as if the (pcm) Powertrain control module has a ground circuit. It will need to be replaced.

1989 Thunderbird won't start.

Ignition switch is more likely. If it's consistently making contact in the same position every time, the relay sounds like its working. As far as the EEC, I honestly don't know for sure but it doesn't sound like it. All the best!

97 ford thunderbird

U are going to have to pull the gas tank out and replace the fuel pump inside the tank, this is common when you run the gas completely out, the pump is cooled by the gas it runs in, if u run it low allot it burns out the pump bearings very quickly.

Check out the Starter Relay and Fuel Pump Relay in the Fuse Box under the Hood. If they are good you might Try Installing a New Fuel Pump and Filter.
