Instrument panel hi... i just bought a 1997 mr2. whenever i take it a little faster than normal road speed... an orange light comes on in my instrument panel that looks like a transmission.... however, whenever i check the gauges before i start the engine... there are two different transmission lights... one is in red with i think a plywheel attached... while the one that comes on is an orange light with without the plywheel pic... what does it indicate?

These Lights are Telling you that the Transmission and FlyWheel are Either Damaged or are Getting Hot Or Both. I would get the Tranny and Flywheel Checked out before it gets Worse. This could result in a Tranny Rebuild or a New Flywheel. Please Rate My Response! Thanks!

Dashboard In a 1997 ford expedition won't come on

If you are talking about the instrument panel and radio lights, one possibility is a broken panel light dimmer rheostat (This is not the same as the headlight dimmer switch). Try turning it to full brightness. If at some point the lights suddenly come on, that's definitely your problem. If the lights don't come on, it could still be broken.

I have seen an older vehicle driven by a person who didn't notice the instrument panel lamps were burning out until the last one went - maybe all you have to do is replace all of the bulbs. :)

Also, check the instrument panel fuse. If it's blown, you'll have to track down the wiring problem that caused the fuse to blow. Merely replacing the fuse is just asking for the problem to happen again at the worst possible moment - such as on a dark road on a dark night where there is a known speed trap, when you're low on fuel, and suddenly you're unable to see either the speedometer or the fuel gauge.

Low traction light sometimes comes on.Weeks go by and it doesnot come on .Then all of a sudden low traction appears again

I have three 1997 Olds Cutlass's. They do it to! Nothing to worry about. They will do that in response to a bump, or washboard road driven over at a certain speed. The wheel speed sensor on each wheel tells the computer how fast each wheel is turning. If one wheel speed is faster than the other three, as when you hit a bump, the computer thinks it is loosing traction and flashes the light, and may or may not engage the ABS system to even up the speed on all four wheels.

Now if that light comes on, and STAYS on, that is another matter. It will only do that if a wheel speed sensor becomes faulty, and then the ABS light will override the traction light.

Drive on!!!

Where is the turn signal flasher located in the 1997 malibu?

You are looking for (typically) a cylindrical device 1-1 1/2 inches in diameter and 2-2 1/2 inches tall. These can be mounted in any position and often are pushed into a spring clip holder. Most have three male connectors although some may have only two.

1997 Toyota Caldina GT-T 3S-GTE

Hi there,
As you say the tacho/speedo come "back up to normal" after the incident, I assume that they either stop working or become erratic while the dash lights are misbehaving.
If so, this sounds like a dash wiring electrical problem.
The O/D OFF light is lit by the switch on the shifter (switch also inputs to the ECU). The ENGINE light is driven also from the ECU but the SLIP light is driven from the ABS/VSC computer, although these two computers do communicate.
Best plan of attack would be interrogate the ECU for error codes or ask a Toyota dealer to do so. At least you'll have some clue to any problems that the ECU's may have picked up.
Contact me about checking for ECU error codes if you want to attempt it yourself. Although the Caldina has an OBDC2 connector, as I understand it it's not 100% compliant, so you'll need a Toyota compatible reader. Fortunately teh codes are also output via the CHECK ENGINE light.
If there's no problems there, I'd be pulling the instrument cluster and checking for wiring problems. I'm not sure where in the world you are but most ex- JDM vehicles could have modified with timers, speed-cut or fuel-cut devices that either have been poorly installed or are playing up and causing electrical problems.

A few issues... '86 MR2

Hi, James. Your description sounds very much like a slipping alternator belt.  The squealing is common when cold because the rubber is harder when cold.  The battery needing a charge after every use also sounds like a possibility.  The fact that when you are experiencing this problem, the car doesn't seem to rev up (which is what I understood from your description) also fits as a symptom for a slipping alternator belt, bad alternator, etc...
I'm also not surprised if your alternator light is not coming on, because when I had my '86 MR-2, I had a similar problem, which turned out to be that a contact point had cracked in the circuit that is behind the instrument cluster causing all kinds of missed alerts from the car (for example, I never knew when the car was running hot because the temperature gauge would not come on, and the check engine light had been on for as long as I had the car, but I didn't know because the instrument cluster was not working properly.  When I fixed the instrument cluster, I discovered the car's computer had ben sending me all kinds of error codes without me knowing).
The good news about this is that this is your project car, and as such, you are probably not in a spot where you may be late for work because of this problem with your battery getting drained.
The bad news is that MR-2's are getting harder to come by for parts, so you may end up having to order them through the web.
I miss my MR2, so I hope this helps you as it helped me.

MR2 no backup lights and occasional loss of power

The answer to the the back up lights it the trans reverse switch on top of the transmission on the drivers side. The wires seem to corrode and fall out. Its really hard to remove so I used epoxy to set the wire back in place. as for the The other issue. Does this happen more often in the rain? Use some dielectric grease on the MAF sensor connected to the air cleaner. I hope that helps. Hit me up for a better explanation.

I had the same problem. Abs light would come on and I would lose all dash instruments. Hit a bump on the road and abs light would go off and dash would come back on. What I did to fix problem, lol I slaped the dash just to the right of instrument panel and it all came back to life. There seems to be a short there, and I slaped it back 3 times in a week and now for the last month it has stayed on.

3 problems speed sensor, check engine light, light on instrument panel

I have a 1991 Accord EX with the same problem.
The speedometer does not work at all and the "S" light continues to flash. I took a chance and went to my local auto wrecker and bought a used VSS (speed sensor) for $20 and that fixed my problem.
