Question about 1989 Toyota 4Runner

1989 Toyota 4Runner problem 3y engine 2000 cc.run Both i oil and CNG . After starting the car it runs fine. Change the gear very smoothly. Suddenly running problems with acceleration. There are no problems with the engine turning over. I checked wiring and vacuum systems i found by removing and reattaching my plug wire from the coil to the distributer it seemed to solve the problem. However, since then have encountered the same issue twice and thought i may have gotten moisture into the fuel line. The last two instances it was able to start and run for only a few seconds which tells me that it was not the wiring. There are no problems with the engine turning over. Am i looking at a fuel pump or am i looking at the distributor or am i looking at vacuum lines? Or do i need air in the tires? HELP. thank you!

If this idles and starts fine, then fuel pump and distributor should be ok. If pump was bad, it would not likely start or run at all. If you have a distributor, then definately check your timing. That's what it sounds like is your timing is off. Do go over all your vaccum lines, that could have same result, but would probably idle fine but accelerate poorly if you had vaccum leak. If timing was off, then it would idle rough and have poor acceleration.
Do you have fuel injection or carbs? I like to use a can of "seafoam" Which removes moisture, depositsm, grime, dirt and anything elese in the fuel system that doesn't belong there.

Hi i would just like to know what oil i can use in my 1989 toyota surf its a turbo diesel the manual says to use a sae 20w/40 cd or better but when i went to buy oil they sold me a 15w -40 api ch-4 is this...

Hi Sarah,

The 15W-40 apiCH-4 oil will be fine for your 4Runner. It is "better", and here is why....

Your new oil being "ch" grade vs "cd" meets the qualification of "better" grade oil. Oil detergents are constantly being modified and as the letters climb alphabetically, each higher letter means that the oil exceeds the requirements of the grade before it. The "-4" is a designation I do not recognize, so I have some more reading to do. It may just mean that you bought a 4 quart (or liter) container or package, but no matter what it represents, this oil is still better.
The "15W-40" designation means that at 0 degrees F or below, the oil behaves as if it is 15 weight oil, and at operating temperatures, it acts like 40 weight oil. This formulation is designed to make cold weather starting easier, since the oil will be "thinner". Since your new oil is still rated as 40 weight at operating temperatures, just like the manual specifies, You should do fine with it.
Make sure you check your oil level once a week, since your 4Runner has a few years on it, it may be "burning" more oil from normal engine wear.
It is very important to change your oil regularly, especially with a diesel engine. The oil picks up allot of contaminants and it gets dirty very fast in a diesel. Follow the oil change schedule in your manual, and you will be good2go!

Where will I find the timing mark in relation to the camshaft on a Toyota Hilux 3Y 2L engine?

There is no mark. Toyota makes use of 2 different colored links on the timing chain. Get the no 1 cylinder on TDC. Align one of the 2 different colored links on the chain with the mark on the crankshaft cog. Aligh the other different colored link with the mark on the camshaft.

1989 toyota corolla starts with Choke not without choke

First of all change the fuel filter. If that doesn't get it, change the spark plugs. If that doesn't help, check for vacuum leaks. Check all intake bolts for tightness. With the engine running, use a stethoscope, or a length of fuel line held to your ear and listen for a hissing sound. Wiggle all your hoses around and check for loose ones or cracked ones.

Today suddenly my 4runner 98 V6 started to rattle in a slow gear and when going uphill the car had a sulfur smell but only when pushing it uphill the engine light came on but turned off after 10 minutes...

Take it into your mechanic ASAP before you throw a rod and destroy your engine, check oil level also...DO NOT DRIVE IT ANYMORE or you may be looking for another car soon.

Intermittent

Pull the spark plug wires out one by one and check for oil on wire. Sometimes the valve cover spark plug hole gaskets leak oil into the spark plug hole and causes a misfire. If oil found clean with brake or carb cleaner and blow out with compressed air. also when car runs bad listen under hood for snapping noise this would be spark escaping to ground somewere. In a dark garage you might be able to see the spark.

Transmission won't change into overdrive when cold

Thats normal, when it warms up it will shift. If no there is a problem. It does that to warm up the engine faster.
